Health News: HIV Vaccine to Begin Clinical Trials in Nigeria!!!

It was just last year November that a Canadian-made HIV vaccine cleared a major hurdle which was the Phase 1 trials. This Vaccine was shown to boost the immune system by increasing  HIV antibodies greater than 15folds averagely for 15 patients out of the 24 HIV patient it was tested on. The vaccine was developed by researchers at Western University in London based on genetically modified killed whole virus.

According to the United States Food and Drug Aministration Agency, the Vaccine was called SAV001-H and was approved for further clinical trials(phase 2 and phase 3).This Phases required the vaccine to be tested on a larger scale- mainly HIV negative people with high risk of getting infected. The Trials were originally planed to be carried out in canada and United states. But today August 21st 2013, the Nigerian/Canadian Collaboration for AIDS Vaccine(NICCAV) met with regards starting the clinical trials in Nigeria.

At a meeting held in Abuja,The Study Head of the Nigerian/Canadian Collaboration On AIDS Vaccine(NICCAV), Dr Evaezi Okpoboro announced plans of future HIV vaccine trial in Nigeria. He however, called for a Holistic approach toward development of a HIV Vaccine that would prevent new infections.

A welcome development you would say.. Please leave your comments below! Thanks...
