OOU MANAGEMENT Denies Charging Medical Students Extra Fees..!!

The management of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, yesterday, said it had not asked its final year medical students to pay extra tuition because of any strike.

In a statement by the Head, Corporate Affairs Division, Mr.Niyi Oduwole in Abeokuta, the management explained that the extension of period of medical students in the clinical school due to strike in the teaching hospital by doctors and other ancillary medical personnel necessitated the request for payment by the students.

The medical students of the institution had accused the management of the institution of calling the bluff of the Ogun State House of Assembly over its directive to over stay action on the collection of the alleged extra fee from the students.

The management said: "To set the records straight, no student and including our medical students were ever directed to pay extra tuition due to any strike in the university.

"However, extension of period of study of medical students in the clinical school due to strike in the teaching hospital by doctors and other ancillary medical personnel may occur."

“I am well, fit and ready for the National Conference,” Dora Akunyili...!!!

A former Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, has denied reports that she is critically ill of an unknown life-threatening ailment, which has kept her bedridden abroad.

In a post she made on her Facebook page on Tuesday, Akunyili, who was nominated to represent Anambra State at the ongoing National Conference in Abuja, said she had since recovered from her illness and had been declared fit for the conference by her doctors.

She, however, did not disclose what kind of illness that befell her, but she admitted that it made her "shed much weight," but she needed to "regrow."

In the post, which was titled, "I am well, fit and ready for the National Conference," the former minister said the claims of his persisting ailment were baseless and unfounded and attributed them to mischief makers.

The full post reads, "My Dear Friends, my attention has been drawn to a story making the rounds online, claiming that I am seriously sick, currently out of the country and in need of urgent prayers.

"This story is baseless, unfounded and the handiwork of mischief makers. It should be ignored and discarded in its entirety.

"As every informed Nigerian knows, I am a delegate to the National Conference currently holding in Abuja. I was duly accredited as a delegate and I am currently in attendance at the National Judicial Institute, Abuja, venue of the conference.

"While it is true that I recently came out of a major sickness, for which I thank Almighty God for delivering me, I have since been declared fit by my doctors and returned to my normal activities. I shed much weight in the course of the sickness – which is normal – but I am well now and only need time to re-grow some flesh.

"There is nothing to worry about either my health or my present stature.

"I know that God has kept me alive for a purpose, this National Conference being part of that purpose.

"For the avoidance of doubt, I am well now, fit, strong enough and ready for this all-important National Conference and I look forward to collaborating with other delegates to chart the way for a better Nigeria.

"I thank all my friends for their love and prayers. May Almighty God bless and reward you."

Woman dies after injecting Vaseline into breasts

A 39-year-old Argentinean woman died after attempting to enhance the size of her breasts by injecting them with Vaseline, Medical Daily reported.

Sonia Perez Llanzon was admitted to the Lucio Molas hospital in Santa Rosa, Argentina after experiencing trouble breathing. Though Llanzon initially denied what she had done, she eventually confessed to doctors that she had injected herself with Vaseline several weeks earlier in the hopes of making her breasts larger. Doctors found several lesions on both breasts as a result of the home injections.

The Vaseline had entered Llanzon's blood stream, causing blood clots that travelled to her lungs. Llanzon experienced a pulmonary embolism – a blockage of an artery in her lung – which resulted in her death.

"In all my medical career, I've never seen a case like this. The human body has antibodies to remove bacteria and viruses, but it hasn't got any mechanisms against this type of product," Julio Pla Cardenas, chief of surgery at Lucio Molas told La Capital.

Pla Cardenas said he has noticed an increasing number of people using Vaseline injections as a form of body augmentation, including men who have injected the product in the hopes of enhancing penis size.

University College Hospital to carry out open-heart surgeries!!

Arrangements have been concluded at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, to facilitate the carrying out of 11 open-heart surgeries in April.

Chairman of the hospital's Department oaf Intervention Cardiovascular, Prof. Kamar Adeleke said, the operation is tagged 'Awake Surgery' because the patients would be conscious during surgery,  and "medication will be given to take the edge off while the operation lasts''.

Adeleke said that the Department of Intervention Cardiovascular was limited financially and as seeking for cash donations from well–meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations.

He noted that the department was partnering some institutions, including Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University and Aliko Dangote Health Institution.

Other partners to be involved are the Kano Teaching Hospital, MTN Health Foundation and the Lagos State Government.

Adeleke said that a team of Nigerian surgeons recently carried out a successful catheterisation surgery without the supervision of foreign experts.

He said that more than 200 patients were awaiting cardiovascular surgery at the UCH, adding that 11 of them were short-listed for the operation.

He said the Intervention Cardiovascular Department (ICD) was able to source for funds for surgery for six of the 11 patients, while the wife of the Oyo State Governor, Mrs Florence Ajimobi and the Lagos State Government would sponsor three patients each, adding that each operation would cost two million naira.

He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians to support the department in carrying out the tasks.

It would be recalled that Adeleke led a team of experts in 2013 to perform the first successful open-heart surgery at UCH.

HIV Infected Female student reveals how she infected over 324 Men...!!!

A female student in Kenya has revealed that she has infected a total of 324 men with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

The HIV positive girl, who attends the Kabarak University in Nakuru, is said to have been infected by a man at a party.

The unnamed 19-year old is allegedly aiming to infect a total of 2000 men in revenge.

According to reports:

The girl allegedly contacted Kenyan Scandals on Facebook and claimed she had something to confess.

After she was assured her identity was going to be protected (the Kenyan Daily Post, however, published a picture from her Facebook profile along with the article) she wrote: "Sep 22nd 2013 is a day I"ll never forget, we went clubbing in town and got drunk with some senior students then went back hostels for party round 2″.

She then explained that when she woke up, the morning after, she realised a boy called Javan had had sex with her while she was drunk.

"I only asked if he used a condom and he said yes, however when taking bath I noticed sperms down there, I wanted to commit suicide, I feared getting pregnant and HIV."

When she discovered she was HIV positive, the girl confronted Javan who insisted he was clean.

"I was so depressed and took alcohol to die, I even bought poison, the pain was just unbearable how was I gone face the world, I let my parents down, I gave up on the world and just wanted to end my life. My future had been ruined, somehow someone had to pay," the girl said.

"I accepted my fate and promised to make all men I come across suffer, I know I'm attractive and men both married and unmarried chase me left right and centre.

"I buried the good girl in me and became the bad girl, my goal was to infect as many as possible," she explained.

The girl then confessed she had already infected 324 men, 156 of which are students at the Kabarak University where she studies, the rest are married men, lecturers, lawyers, celebrities and politicians.

"Not a day passes without me having sex, mostly 4 people per day," she continued in her confession. "Your day is coming, you men destroyed my life and I will make you and your people pay for it"

ATTENTION!!! Rare case of female-to-female HIV infection reported in US...!!!

An extremely rare case of female-to-female HIV infection has been reported by the Centre of Disease Control in the US.

Testing of a 46-year-old newly diagnosed woman in 2012 found the virus she had contracted to be "virtually identical" to that of her 43-year-old female partner, who was diagnosed with HIV in 2008.

The woman who contracted the disease had not had sexual intercourse with a man for ten years. She had carried out no other action which can be associated with HIV contraction such as tattooing, acupuncture, transfusions or injecting drugs.

The Texan had been in a sexual relationship with three different woman in the last five years and had been in a relationship with the infected woman for six months. In March 2012, a month before the diagnosis, the woman, had tested negative for HIV while selling her blood.

Following the diagnosis, the women reported having regular unprotected oral and vaginal sex and sharing sex toys, the CDC report said.

It added that the pair described their sexual contact as sometimes "rough to the point of inducing bleeding in either woman," and that they had unprotected sex during menstruation.

"Transmission of HIV between women who have sex with women (WSW) has been reported rarely and is difficult to ascertain," the report explained.

"The potential for HIV transmission by female-to-female sexual contact includes unprotected exposure to vaginal or other body fluids and to blood from menstruation, or to exposure to blood from trauma during rough sex."

The CDU said although there has been a small number of previous reports of woman-to-woman HIV infection, this is the first to be supported by phylogenetic testing.

Baby Goodness Born without an ANUS....!!!

Imagine a life without an anus. Imagine your baby excreting faeces from her mouth. Imagine having to be abandoned by your spouse when you needed him or her most. Imagine accessing care and you were told that your hospital file is no where to be found? These aptly described the present challenges confronting Mrs. Florence Nkemachor Edokpayi and her four year-old child, Goodness Edokpayi.

Goodness, according to a medical report from Lagos State University Teaching Hospital,LASUTH and signed by a Consultant Paediatric Surgeon, Dr. O. Faboya requires urgent assistance for further medical attention after undergone three operations already.

Goodness is said to have been born with Down syndrome with delayed passage of meconium and further medical investigation revealed that she has Hirschsprungs disease.

Unfortunately, the defective intestine had made it impossible such that he could not pass faeces normally through the anus.

However, after due consultation with two hospitals abroad, BLK Super Specialty Hospital, India and Great Ormond Street Hospital, London had both reviewed the case and said they were capable of carrying out the operations. Now, Goodness needs a total of N3.4 million ($20,000) for the life - saving operations and the associated expenses. Unfortunately, Florence is now running from pillar to post as she cannot afford the sum.

Narrating her ordeal to Vanguard, Florence said few days after Goodness was born, his tummy was swelling as he could not excrete like normal babies. And it got to a point that faeces was coming out of his mouth.

Then, her mother Florence rushed him to LASUTH where it was discovered that he has a defective intestine that could not allow him pass faeces through the anus.

Medical doctors at the hospital in the battle to save his life carried out what they called, "A Martin-Duhamel pull over" through surgery when he was one year old. Later, there was post operative complication which required re-operation.

At age three and half, he had colo-anal anastomosis done. Since then, the baby has undergone three operations without the doctors being able to correct the abnormality.

To add salt to injury, the last time they went to the hospital in October, the mother was told that the baby's medical file and records has gone missing and as such they could not do anything and were sent home without any hope or help.

As if these were not enough, Mr. Kingsley Edokpayi the supposed father of Goodness, upon discovery of these abnormalities in his boy abandoned his wife and child to their fate. Since then, he never cared or asked after their welfare.

Right now, Florence has been catering for herself and the baby by selling telephone recharge cards and from little financial assistance she gets from relatives.

Florence who said all the efforts of the doctors have not solve her child's problem, appealed to well meaning Nigerians to help her child.

People living with HIV/AIDS protest non-supply of anti-retroviral drugs in Benue..!!

In a report by Premium times, About 500 persons living with HIV and AIDS in Benue held a protest over the non release of anti-retroviral drugs to hospitals in the state in the past two months.

The aggrieved patients besieged the premises of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Makurdi, on Monday to press for government intervention.

The spokeswoman of the group, Kasevhemba Aondoakaa, expressed shock that the government decided to abandon them. Mrs. Aondoakaa, a teacher, said that the apparent insensitive position of the government toward their plight had left them with no option than to embark on the protest.

"For two good months, no single drug has been given to us. Our regular test has not been carried out either.

"They keep on telling us that there are no drugs to give us. We are tired of hearing all these stories; we want the president and the minister to do something about this issue.

"We are being maltreated, according to them, U.S. Presidential Emergency Plan for Aids Relief in Africa (PEPFAR) has withdrawn its sponsorship for the programme."

The Head of Clinical Services, Petelu Inunduh, however, said the issue was beyond the hospital management. Mr. Inunduh explained that the programme was initially handled by the Aid Prevention Initiative Nigeria, APIN. He said that as a result of the regionalisation exercise in 2013, the centre was handed over to Centre for Integrated Health Programme, CIHP, by Centre for Diseases Control, CDC.

"From the beginning of the programme, our centre was under APIN but was later handed over to CIHP in 2013 as a result of the regionalisation exercise.

"We are only hosting the programme here, though 110 of our members of staff are currently working for the programme, while 55 members of staff were employed by PEPFAR.

"We have over 15,000 patients on ART list and over 27,000 who are also collecting their drugs at our centre.

"When we were handed over to CIHP in 2013, they declined to take over on the grounds that they lacked capacity to run the centre.

"Subsequently, we were again handed over to the Institute of Human Virology of Nigeria, IHVN, but the marriage has failed to yield positive result.

"Since their takeover, there has been erratic supply of drugs, laboratory reagents, and lack of funds to manage the laboratories," he said.

He disclosed that the management had already held a series of meeting with stakeholders with the aim of addressing the problem.

Just recently, people living with HIV/AIDS alleged that the Benue State government distributed expired anti-retroviral drugs; the government denied it.

Mother sells three-day-old baby for N260,000 in Akwa Ibom..!!

A nursing mother in Akwa Ibom named Imaobong Udoh  has been arrested for allegedly selling her 3-day old baby girl for N260,000 as reported by Punch Newspaper.

Also arrested along with Imaobong were four persons for allegedly participating in the theft of the baby.
They are the buyer, Mrs. Regina James; her husband, Mfon James; the traditional birth attendant who delivered the baby, Mrs. Comfort Henry; and Mr Emmanuel Okon, a homoeopathic doctor, who arranged the sale.
Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Gwadabe, said in Uyo on Monday that the father of the baby had reported the theft to the police, leading to the arrest of the suspects.
Gwadabe said, "On March 3, 2014, a case of child stealing was reported by Mr. Eteobong James, of No. 33 Urua Ekpa Road, Itu Local Governmnet Area, to the police, where a three-day-old baby girl was sold for N260, 000.

"Based on the report, the suspects were arrested.
"Mr Emmanuel Etim Okon, was the one that arranged the infamous deal and personally conveyed the baby from the point of delivery at Nna-Enin in Uruan Local Government Area to the buyers at No. 37 Church Road, Uyo."

The police boss explained that Regina allegedly paid N150,000 to the mother of the baby and N110,000 to Okon, the homoeopathic doctor, for his services.

The commissioner stated that the accused would soon be arraigned in court and warned child thieves to steer clear of the state.
He explained that the state would not be conducive for their illicit trade.

Husband of the buyer, James, who spoke with PUNCH METRO said when his wife told him she was pregnant, he gave her money for ante-natal care, but was surprised to hear that she bought the baby.
He said, "l am a trader. My wife, Regina, told me she was pregnant and I gave her money for ante-natal. One day, she told me she was in labour and later informed me that she had been delivered of a baby girl.

"I did not know she bought the baby since she has given birth to four children, though three died."
However, the homeopathic doctor said Regina brought the mother of the baby, Imaobong, to him so that he could take care of her during ante-natal.
He said Regina had explained to him that the father of the baby was not financially buoyant to take care of her.

He denied collecting N110,000 from Regina, stating that he only collected N30,000, which was the cost of delivery of Imaobong's baby.
"When Regina brought Imaobong to me, she told me that the man responsible for the pregnancy was unable of take care of her.

"The N30,000 I collected from her was for the upkeep of Imaobong before and during delivery of the baby. I did not collect N110,000."

'Get More Involved in Sporting Activities'...

As the maiden Nigerian Medical Doctors Games ends in Akwa Ibom State, Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, has advised medical doctors to practise what they preach by getting more involved in sporting activities and others that promote healthy living.

Chukwu who spoke while flagging off the maiden edition of Nigerian Medical Doctors' Games organised by the Nigerian Medical Association in Eket, Akwa Ibom State noted that the link between lack of exercise, poor nutrition and smoking as well as development of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) like obesity, diabetes and heart diseases have been scientifically proven.

The Minister was of the view that Games will reduce mortality and morbidity among members.

At the Games tagged "let the doctors play", Chukwu revealed that the concept of having games for doctors on annual basis is a great initiative that demonstrates the value and role of sports as a component of the overall strategy for the promotion of healthy living amongst the citizenry as they take a cue from doctors who do not smoke, and are physically active.

"The link between lack of exercise, poor nutrition and smoking and the development of Non-communicable diseases, NCDs like obesity, diabetes and heart disease have been scientifically proven. Proven too are the profound beneficial effects physical activity had both on the prevention of these conditions and on the amelioration and reversal of their negative effects on the bodies.

The concept of having these games for doctors on annual basis is a great initiative that demonstrates in clear terms, the value and role of sport as a component of the overall strategy for the promotion of healthy living amongst the citizenry as they take a cue from doctors who do not smoke, are not overweight and are physically active."

He stated that it will also encourage the Nigerian doctors to live a healthy lifestyle, thereby practising what they preach. He maintained that the salutary effect of such games on the local economy is not in doubt as sports in general promote tourism.

President, NMA, Dr. Osahon Enabulele told the gathering that the games were in response to the increasing deaths amongst doctors/dentists.

The event featured football, Lawn tennis (male and female), table tennis (male and female), basket ball (male and female), badminton (male and female) scrabble (male and female), Chess (male and female) and draught (male).

Enabulele said the association identified the need for a strategic response to the increasing deaths amongst doctors/dentists thereby put in place the Doctors Games to stem the work stress on medical doctors.

Woman suffering from Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder(PGAD)...!!!

A 40-year-old woman, Heather McCuen, had a bizarre medical condition which gives her non-stop orgasms, USA.

The woman from South Carolina suffers from Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) which began when she became pregnant.

Even basic household chores such as washing or cleaning could set off her orgasms.

In a desperate desire to live a normal life, Heather has tried various costly treatments: intimate botox jabs, anti-depressants, even electric-shock therapy.

As all of the methods failed the woman tired of the constant orgasms and need to masturbate felt compelled to end her own life.

Heather said: "Having orgasms all day might sound like fun but for me, it's a living hell.

I sat down and wrote suicide notes to my family, explaining I was sick of feeling this way and felt the only way out was to leave them behind," she said.

Poor woman, who lives with husband and son cannot even share a bed with her partner and has to sleep alone.

Now the only thing she asked for is a normal life. They haven't shared a bed for all the time of the illness and sex is out of the question.

According to Heather, earlie the couple had a brilliant sex life but now if they sleep together it sets the woman off having to have orgasm after orgasm for days.

PGAD, results in a spontaneous, persistent, and uncontrollable genital arousal in women, with or without orgasm or genital engorgement, unrelated to any feelings of sexual desire.

It was first documented in 2001, only recently characterized as a distinct syndrome in medical literature with a comparable counterpart increasingly reported by men.

Nathan and Laura give birth to baby Nathan (Lilliputian)...!!!

A mother who was told to have an abortion because her baby's chance of survival was so low has given birth to Britain's only 'double dwarf'.

Nathan Phillips, who is three months old, was born healthy and fit to Laura Whitfield, 24, and her fiancé, Nathan Phillips, 34, both of whom have restricted growth.

Both of the parents have different forms of dwarfism and the new arrival has stunned medical experts by inheriting both types.

As a result, his mother has hailed him a 'double dwarf'.

Though doctors do not yet know what impact it will have on the baby they say there is no reason to believe he won't lead a relatively normal life.

Ms Whitfield, from Sunderland, said that his safe arrival was a huge relief after she was advised early in the pregnancy that the baby may only survive half an hour, if born alive.

Doctors told her to consider an abortion after irregularities in scans caused professionals to worry the youngster had inherited a deadly combination of genes.

But Ms Whitfield, who had complications throughout the pregnancy, ignored advice and decided to carry on with the pregnancy.

She was then told that both she and the baby would need special care after the birth – if he survived.

The mother prepared herself for the prospect of not seeing her newborn baby after having a C-section under general anaesthetic.

But she was amazed when she woke from the operation to find her fiancé sitting at her bedside with the newborn by his side.

Ms Whitfield, who has appeared in a number of films such as Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, said: 'I was having scans once a week because they were a little worried there could be complications.

'It wasn't until 24 or 25 weeks that things started changing. They noticed that his measurements weren't quite what they should be.

'They thought that he had inherited two rare genes that could have been dangerous.

'I was told to consider abortion and told that if he had these genes he would probably die within half an hour of birth.

'I didn't even think about abortion at any point – I don't believe in abortion. I could feel him moving around inside me – he was a little wriggler. In my head everything was fine.

'When I went down to theatre to have him I was so worried – they had been very cautious with us and said that there was a high chance we would need special care after he was born and that I might not see him.

'When I woke up Nathan was stood next to me with little Nathan in a cot. I couldn't believe it – I just cried.'

Ms Whitfield, who is the only person with dwarfism in her family, has achondroplasia – meaning she has shortened limbs as well as a curvature of the spine – causing serious pain.

Mr Phillips, who lived in Bristol before meeting Ms Whitfield, has a different form of dwarfism – pseudoachondroplasia, which means his bone growth is stunted and he has weak hips.

Experts fear that baby Nathan may inherit back and hip problems due to having both strands of dwarfism, but it is not yet known if he will have either.

His mother said that she hopes Nathan will be able to live a normal life, much like herself, despite his condition.

She added that while she was sure Nathan was the only person in the UK to become a 'double dwarf', the condition had been heard of elsewhere in the world.

Doctor saves baby ‘who looked like his daughter’ 23 minutes after she had died..!!

A newborn baby who failed to breathe for 23 minutes was saved by a doctor who refused to give up on her because she looked like his own daughter.

Charlotte Richards's baby stopped breathing at birth and after 20 minutes – the usual cut-off point – the distraught mother feared the worst.

But one consultant urged a final effort to save her – because he said she reminded him of his own baby.

And at the last moment tiny Beatrix coughed and her body spluttered back to life.

Mrs Richards, 24, said: 'As I brought her out, I knew something wasn't right.

'After they'd been working on her for 15 minutes, I'd pretty much given up hope. But, after 23 minutes, this one consultant said they should try just once more – and it worked.

'Afterwards, he told me that something about her reminded him of his own daughter and he had decided not to give up. It's a miracle really.'

The condition results in newborns being deprived of oxygen and often causes brain damage or death.

That evening she was transferred to a specialist team at London's St Thomas' Hospital where she was wrapped in a cooling blanket for 72 hours. This brought down her core body temperature, reducing the risk of brain damage.

Four days after she was born, her parents were able to hold her for the first time. Ten weeks on, Beatrix is now home and well in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire.

An MRI scan during her traumatic first days showed that she had suffered none of the brain damage feared.

The grateful couple, who also have a healthy three-year-old daughter called Isabella, are now fund-raising for the Harlow hospital to show their thanks.

Second baby born with HIV ‘cured’ as doctors try to replicate results globally..!

Two children with HIV who were treated immediately after birth have no signs of the virus nine and 23 months later, scientists said in a report that suggests a potential approach to curing HIV-infected babies.

The findings from the two children are spurring doctors in Canada, South Africa and the U.S. to try to replicate the results, and spawned a study in 54 babies, the researchers said yesterday. The research suggests that deploying drugs early in life may help keep the virus from gaining a foothold. The importance of such a result is clear: More than 260,000 children were infected globally with HIV in 2012, either at birth or through breastfeeding.

While the early findings are promising, a final step is needed before determining that a cure is at hand, said Deborah Persaud, an associate professor of infectious diseases at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

"The only way we can prove that we've accomplished remission in these kids is taking them off treatment, and that's not without risks," Persaud, who was involved in the research on both babies, said in an interview yesterday at a medical meeting on infectious disease held in Boston.

While the latest HIV drugs can keep the virus in check, they don't eliminate it from hidden reservoirs deep within the body. The drugs are taken for a lifetime and patients often have to cycle among different medicines to offset the disease's ability to become resistant.

LOS ANGELES BABY

Persaud presented results yesterday from a child born last year in Los Angeles County. The baby began treatment with anti- HIV drugs four hours after being born and still has no trace of the virus in its blood, Persaud said. The baby remains on treatment, and there's no immediate plan to stop the medicine to see whether the virus rebounds, she said.

The previous child, born in Mississippi, was cleared of the virus with a similar approach a year ago, and remains HIV-free 23 months after ceasing treatment, according to Persaud, who presented her report yesterday at the annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.

Inspired by the Mississippi baby, doctors in Canada are now seeking to repeat the result in five newborns, and three babies in South Africa are also receiving medicines in an effort to cure them. Within the next few months, researchers also plan to start a trial in 54 children to test whether the approach can be repeated on a larger scale, Persaud said.

That larger study will start infected infants on treatment within 48 hours of birth, then take them off drugs two years later to see whether the virus rebounds.

DRUG COMBINATION

The babies will receive a three-drug combination of zidovudine and lamivudine, two now-generic medicines developed by GlaxoSmithKline Plc, and nevirapine, a treatment from Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH that has also lost patent protection.

The cases involving the two infants build on increasing evidence about approaches to curing a disease doctors once thought an insurmountable challenge.

To date, the only adult to have been cured of the virus is Timothy Ray Brown, the so-called Berlin patient. Brown has been clear of the virus since having a bone marrow transplant for leukemia in 2007 from a donor with a rare mutation to a gene called CCR5 that keeps HIV at bay without the aid of antiretroviral drugs.

While the case proves that HIV can be cured, bone marrow transplants are too expensive and dangerous to make them practical on a mass scale.

Sangamo Biosciences Inc. is trying to mimic the CCR5 mutation with a gene-altering technology. In a study published yesterday in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers led by Carl June at the University of Pennsylvania infused 12 patients with Richmond, California-based Sangamo's SB-728-T, an experimental treatment that changes CCR5.

While the trial was designed to assess the product's safety, not its efficacy, it found that the treatment was associated with a drop in the amount of virus in some patients who were taken off their regular anti-AIDS drugs.

An Obvious Diagnosis..!!

A young doctor was to take up his new position in a small community hospital in a town.

The retiring older doctor suggested the young one to accompany him on his rounds for a couple of weeks to understand the finer points of practice in a small community and at the same time for him to meet a few patients.

At the first visit to a farmers house the farmer's wife complained, "I've been a little sick to my stomach.". The senior doctor thought for a moment or two and said, 'Well I think you've probably been eating too much of bananas , try to cut back on the amount you've been eating and see if that helps"

As they left the young doctor was absolutely surprised and asked his senior , "You didn't even examine that woman. How'd you make your diagnosis so quickly?"

"I didn't have to. I dropped my stethoscope on the floor by mistake and when I bent over to pick it up guess what I saw in the trash bin – at least half dozen banana peels.. That was what was probably making her sick."

"oh" the younger doctor said, "Pretty clever, maybe I'll try that at our next house visit".

The next day they did another house visit.. Both spent several minutes talking with a young pretty lady who was complaining of lack of energy and tiredness for the past few days for no real reason. She said " Doc, I'm feeling terribly run down lately, I don't know why "

The older doctor said "Oh, I am sure there is good reason but for someone as youthful as you this cannot be a serious reason"

The young doctor on this responded, " I think sir there is, she is probably been doing too much work for the church, perhaps she cut back a bit and sleep a little more and see if that helps". The girl went slightly red and said nothing and just nodded.

As they left, the senior doc surprised at this said, "Your diagnosis is probably correct, but how did you arrive at it? "

"Well, just like you did at the last house, I also dropped my stethoscope and when I bent down to pick it up, guess what I saw" "What did you see" " I noticed the preacher under the bed!!."

The First Person to Receive a Carmat Artificial Heart is Dead After 75 Days..!!

The world's first receiver of a Carmat artificial heart has died, 75 days after the implant.

Three other patients with terminal heart failure are about to have similar artificial hearts implanted. While the devices are designed to last for up to five years, the clinical trials will be considered a success if the patients survive for more than a month.

Carmat is not the only kind of artificial heart available. Syncardia produces artificial hearts that have been implanted in about 1,200 patients, with the longest living for just under four years before receiving a real heart from a matching donor.

Syncardia's artificial hearts are designed to keep patients alive while waiting for a real heart transplant, while Carmat intends its hearts to be permanent implants for terminally ill patients who are unable to receive real organs because they are too old or because donors are too scarce.

(SURVEY)Do Nigerian Women eat their baby's Placenta..!!

Ever imagined what it would taste like to have fried Placenta for Dinner? Omoh... that would be awful but please hold back your gag reflex because I feel the same way to.

In other parts of the world, women have been eating and honouring their placentas for centuries. Many cultures view this uniquely impermanent organ as having sacred or magical properties. And when you consider its life giving functions, it is easy to see why. The Ibo of Nigeria and Ghana treat the placenta as the dead twin of the live child and give it full burial rites.

The placenta is the amazing organ that connects the baby's body to the mother's body while baby grows in the uterus. It keeps baby nourished throughout the pregnancy and removes waste.

Most mammals eat their own placentas right after giving birth. It's called PLACENTOPHAGIA, and scientists aren't certain why they do it.

PLACENTOPHAGY can be divided into two categories, maternal placentophagy and non-maternal placentophagy.

MATERNAL placentophagy is defined as, "a mother's ingestion of her own placenta postpartum, in any form, at any time."

NON-MATERNAL placentophagy is defined as, "the ingestion of the placenta by any person other than the mother, at any time."

MERITS...
1) In addition to protein and various vitamins, placenta contains high levels of CRH ( corticotropin-releasing hormone), known to reduce stress.

2)Consumption of the placenta is also believed to cause the release of the chemical oxytocin in the brain. Oxytocin stimulates uterine contractions leading to the onset of labor, and after childbirth can also cause the uterus to contract and sooner reach its pre-pregnancy size.

DEMERITS...
Risk of spreading blood-borne illness has been noted. This risk is only present in cases of non-maternal placentophagy, where the mother's blood is shared with another human.

Having Known all these, the question remains; will you eat or advice someone to eat placenta?

MEDICAL JOKES: Painless labour for mom and dad..!!

A lady and her husband, who went to the hospital to give birth to their child, heard of a new technology from the doctor, which would transfer the labour pain from the mother to the father.

The couple were both excited and very much in favour of it. The doctor however said that, to start with, he would transfer only 10% of the pain, as even that small amount of pain would be too much for the father. They agreed and the doctor started the transfer.

The father did not show any signs of pain as the doctor kept increasing the amount of transfer. The transfer was complete at one stage with 100% pain transferred to the father. The father was comfortable even at that stage and the mother delivered the baby.

The couple left the hospital with the baby, literally painless and ecstatic, only to return home and find the mailman dead on the porch. OMG!!!

Scientists, mystery woman unlock path to new HIV vaccine...!!!

In 2009, a Thai vaccine trial demonstrated an experimental vaccine was about 30 percent effective in preventing HIV infection.

The mysterious HIV-positive woman has been able to prevent the virus from growing in her body by producing antibodies to fight it over a number of years.

Only one-in-five people living with HIV produce "broadly neutralising antibodies," that kill multiple types of the virus in laboratory settings, according to Dr Lynn Morris, head of AIDS research at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD).

Morris and other scientists think they could be the key to an effective HIV vaccine or even cure in the distant future.

THE EVOLUTION OF A KILLER

Known only by her clinical trial identification code, CAP256 provided multiple blood samples over the years that allowed researchers from the Centre for AIDS Programme Research in South Africa (CAPRISA) to see how her special antibodies quickly evolved to outwit HIV's protective shell and kill the virus in lab settings.

Until now, no one has understood when or how broadly neutralising antibodies arise in HIV patients. But in an article published this week in the scientific journal, Nature, South African researchers from the NICD, CAPRISA and several universities unlocked the answers in one woman's blood.

Globally, three clinical trials are already experimenting with the use of these special antibodies to kill HIV in monkeys. CAP256's antibodies will likely move into monkey trials as part of an experimental vaccine, which if successful, would precede about seven years of clinical trials in humans.

"Current experimental HIV vaccines do not induce those broadly neutralising antibodies and we think that's why they are only moderately effective," said Morris, who cautioned that it was but a one small step on the road to a vaccine.

THE WOMAN INVOLVED....

Not much is publicly known about CAP256 but we do know some information from published descriptions of CAPRISA's study sample. Around 2004, CAP256 was likely in her late 20s or early 30s and living in KwaZulu-Natal's rural Vulindlela – the epicentre of South Africa's HIV epidemic.

Someone she knew probably mentioned that CAPRISA researchers were enrolling HIV-negative women like her in a new study. Like the majority of the women who enrolled, CAP256 may have been a sex worker. After joining the study, she and most likely some of her friends received HIV risk counselling and condoms but like almost 45 percent of Vulindlela's young women, CAP256 became HIV-positive.

The blood samples she continued to provide would guide South African researchers to what Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom has described as a "breath-through finding."

At a press conference to announce the results, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi applauded researchers and thanked CAP256.

"Let me commend our scientists but also people with HIV and AIDS who willingly participate in research trials," Motsoaledi told Health-e. "Your selflessness in helping the world to better understand the HI virus so that we can both prevent transmission and find a cure is highly appreciated."

"I believe the solution for this HIV/AIDS conundrum lies in here on the continent of Africa…especially in South Africa seeing that we are facing the highest burden of this disease," said Motsoaledi adding that South Africa makes up 30 percent of all the people on HIV treatment globally. "Each new development emerging in this part of the world makes me very happy."

MEDICAL JOKE: The Story of the Chinese Obstetrician..!!

The Chinese in early 50's were going through a big baby boom period and the doctors were over-stretched. They devised a way of avoiding repeated visits by would be mothers. This is how the story goes:

A young chinese woman, three months pregnant went to see her local government obstetrician doctor who was very busy, his assistant saw her and asked her to quickly bare her tummy. He then reached into his desk and took out a rubber stamp, which he pressed below her navel and asked the young lady to go home.

At home, she and her curious husband tried to read the tiny chinese words printed on her belly, but they were too small. They then got a magnifying glass and tried to read the words; the stamp read: "When your husband can read this without the magnifying glasses, it's time to come to the hospital."(LWKMD)

Panic gripped residents of Upper Adesuwa in Benin City, the Edo State capital, following the discovery of the corpse of a middle-aged woman said to have been raped to death, at the weekend.

The woman identified as Miss Deborah Bassey was said have been on her way to attend a night vigil at a Pentecostal Church before she met her untimely death in the hands of the rapists.

"This is the most mindless act by a fellow human being, how could they have raped her and even killed her at the same time?  We pray that God will accept her soul and avenge her death."

CANCER PATIENT MAKES MEDICAL HISTORY AFTER SURGEONS ATTACH HIS LEG TO HIS ARM TO KEEP IT ALIVE...!

A man with cancer made medical history when doctors trying to reach a deep
tumour removed his leg and attached it to his arm.

Ian McGregor, from Sunderland, had to go under the knife in an 18-hour life-saving operation to remove the cancerous cells from a hard-to-reach place in his upper
thigh.

But in a medical first, daring doctors at a Newcastle hospital removed his leg muscles and tissue.

They then attached it to his forearm to keep the cells alive with fresh blood flowing through them.

After the operation, the excess skin and flesh was then used to repair the hole where the tumour was.

Thankfully for Ian, although his leg still had to be amputated, the operation was a success.

Speaking to the BBC, Ian said: "They told me we're definitely going to be taking the calf off and implant it into your right arm to keep it alive.

"I thought - it's just amazing what they can do, it's like Star Trek!"

He is now cancer free and awaiting a prosthetic leg.

It's not the first medical miracle to help cure the disease, recently a cancer patient was rid of up to 70 tumours thanks to a new drug.

Ian Brooks became cancer-free thanks to a new treatment which acts "like an armour piercing shell".

Consultants at the Christie hospital in Manchester were amazed when they looked at his scan after and found the tumours had disappeared.

I saw my classmates being butchered – Yobe massacre survivor narrates experience..!

A 14-year-old, JSS 2 student of Federal Government College, FGC, Bunu Yadi, Ibrahim Musa Lampo, who survived the horrific Boko Haram massacre on Tuesday which claimed the lives of 43 students, narrated his ordeal and how his school mates were gunned down y the insurgents.

Lampo who was shot in the leg and sustained few injuries in the attack said:

"I was shot on my left leg, while I was sleeping.  When I woke up, I could not walk and was later taken to the girls hostel where the insurgents gathered us with the female students. They selected some of the female students and went away with them, while they left some of us groaning in pain from gun shot".

The insurgents burnt down hostels, classrooms and more than 40 houses during the attack.

Vanguard reports:

Ibrahim who recounted his experience while groaning in pains was receiving treatment for gunshot injuries at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.

His mother, Hajiya Hauwa Lampo, who was sitting beside him on the hospital bed lamented the inability of government to protect the lives of the innocent students.

The mother passionately appealed to the Federal Government to "provide adequate security for all unity schools in Nigeria, particularly in the north eastern region of the country by constructing a fence that will shield the students from intruders. And if the government can not deploy adequate security personnel, they should despatch sniffer dogs into the schools to patrol every nook and corner and this will go a long way in curbing the insurgency."

Ibrahim's father, Mallam Musa Lampo, an immigration officer was still in shock over the incident and simply said: "I have committed everything into the hands of God."

Kaduna Health Workers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Salary..!!

Health workers in Kaduna State under the aegis of Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) on Friday declared an indefinite strike over non-implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) agreement signed two years ago with the State Government.

Addressing a news conference in Kaduna, JOHESU Chairman, Mrs Cecilia Musa, said that the government only implemented 70 percent of the agreement, saying the industrial action would begin on March 1, 2014, if the State Government failed to fulfil the remaining 30 percent of the agreement.

Musa claimed that nurses in the state worked under stressful condition as they attend to 30 patients daily, against the World Health Organisation (WHO) standard of a nurse per six patients, noting that some of the union's members had decided to seek greener pasture in other health facilities where CONHESS is fully implemented.

Revealing that a meeting between officials of the union and the State Government on February 3, 2014 and February 25, 2014 were deadlocked, Musa said  that strike remained the only option open to the union to push for the implementation of the balance of  30 per cent Consolidated Health Salary Structure(CONHESS)  being an unfulfilled promise by the State Government.

The union said all appeals to the State Government to pay them their outstanding arrears did not yield any positive result, only for the State Government to pay the medical doctors up to 90 percent of their salary structure.

Reacting to the development, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Dogo Tot, said that the workers' demands  were genuine, but lamented that the Government did not have enough funds to implement the 30 percent CONHESS.

He called for patience, and appealed to the workers to shelve the impending strike.
