HEALTH NEWS: Government should stop employing Doctors as contract staff...!!

The immediate past chairman, Medical Guild, Lagos State branch, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, had said that governments should stop employing doctors as contract staff.

He spoke at their Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Lagos, recently, with the theme: " Exodus of health providers: implication for healthcare delivery system in Nigeria".

"Stop employing doctors as contract staff, this creates job insecurity and lack of dedication as these jobs are used as temporary employment until a better permanent job is secured, " he lamented.

Odusote stressed that Nigeria is producing manpower for developed countries while the health sector is nose diving in the presence of increasing gross revenue expenditure and worsening financial management by the governments.

He noted that out of 65,000 registered medical practitioners in Nigeria, about 35,000 of them practise outside the shore, which in turn have negative impact on the sector.

He advised government at all levels to create better working environment and also improve remuneration for medical doctors in order to reflect the current economic realities within the community, state, nation and the entire world.

Reacting to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Odusote said, some people believe that the scheme has failed while others believe that it is the way to go "but one thing remain incontrovertible, that is the fact that Nigerians continue to die for inability to pay for healthcare services as at when due. Which way Nigerians?, he asked.

"The bottom line is, how can we stop this dangerous slide and return the train to an upward movement," he averred.
