HEALTH NEWS: New HIV strain discovered in West Africa...!!!

According to reports, Swedish researchers have identified a new strain of HIV recently discovered in West Africa, which progresses to AIDS more quickly, reports AFP.

The A3/02 strain combines the two most common HIV strains in Guinea-Bissau and develops into AIDS within five years, up to two-and-a-half years faster than either of its parent strains, said Angelica Palm, one of the scientists behind the study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. This type of strain, a recombinant, appears when a person becomes infected by two different strains, allowing DNA to fuse and create a new one.

Researchers from Lund University warn in the study that recombinant strains may spread more rapidly, in part from immigration to the United State or Europe, and that there are likely many more that still haven't been identified.

But with this particular strain that was discovered in Guinea-Bissau in 2011, Palm says, "The good news is that as far as we know, the medicines that are available today are equally functional on all different subtypes of variants."

MEDICAL JOKE: AN OBVIOUS DIAGNOSIS....!!!(Must Read)

A young doctor was to take up his new position in a small community hospital in a town.

The retiring older doctor suggested the young one to accompany him on his rounds for a couple of weeks to understand the finer points of practice in a small community and at the same time for him to meet a few patients.

At the first visit to a farmer's house, the farmer's wife complained, "I've been a little sick to my stomach.". The senior doctor thought for a moment or two and said, 'Well I think you've probably been eating too much of bananas , try to cut back on the amount you've been eating and see if that helps"

As they left the young doctor was absolutely surprised and asked his senior , "You didn't even examine that woman. How'd you make your diagnosis so quickly?"

"I didn't have to. I dropped my stethoscope on the floor by mistake and when I bent over to pick it up guess what I saw in the trash bin – at least half dozen banana peels.. That was what was probably making her sick." "oh" the younger doctor said, "Pretty clever, maybe I'll try that at our next house visit".

The next day they did another house visit..
Both spent several minutes talking with a young pretty lady who was complaining of lack of energy and tiredness for the past few days for no real reason. She said " Doc, I'm feeling terribly run down lately, I don't know why "

The older doctor said "Oh, I am sure there is good reason but for someone as youthful as you this cannot be a serious reason"

The young doctor on this responded, " I think sir there is, she is probably been doing too much work for the church, perhaps she cut back a bit and sleep a little more and see if that helps". The girl went slightly red and said nothing and just nodded.

As they left, the senior doc surprised at this said, "Your diagnosis is probably correct, but how did you arrive at it? "

"Well, just like you did at the last house, I also dropped my stethoscope and when I bent down to pick it up, guess what I saw" "What did you see" " I noticed the preacher under the bed!!."(Lol)

HEALTH NEWS: Nigerian Gynecologists urge FG to help reduce Maternal Mortality...!

The Chairman, Lagos State chapter of the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetrics of Nigeria, Dr. Olurotimi Akinola, has called on the Federal Government to adopt measures that will aid the World Health Organisation meet its maternal death reduction target by 2015.

WHO in the Millennium Development Goal hopes to reduce child mortality in the world by 75 per cent in 2015.

Akinola made this call at a briefing to highlight programmes for SOGON's forthcoming 47th Annual General Meeting in Lagos.

He lamented that Nigeria had one of the highest maternal death rates in the world, describing the current rate of 545 deaths per 100,000 live births as unacceptable.

Akinola said, "The Millennium Development Goal is for the reduction of maternal mortality by 75 per cent in 2015. For us to achieve this, the nation must achieve the maternal mortality of less than 250 women by 100, 000 life birth. Right now, we are boasting of 545 women by 100, 000 life birth.

"We are hoping that since we adopted maternal death review, even if we do not get there, we will not be too far away from getting there. If we had adopted maternal mortality review 10 years ago, our maternal mortality rate would have reduced.

"We hope that since we have adopted the maternal death review, there will be reduction."

Akinola, however,  called on government at all levels to embark on maternal death review to know the circumstances surrounding mothers' death.

He noted that the establishment of  functional primary health centres would reduce death during birth.

HEALTH GOSSIP: A Surgeon has warned Nigerians against visiting traditional Bone setters...!!

In a report by Punch Newspaper, An orthopedic surgeon at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Dr Ikpeme has raised alarm over high rate of damages which traditional bone-setters have done on the limbs of Nigerians and others.

He said it is important for Nigerians to know that there are now better trained medical experts particularly orthopedic surgeons at many of the tertiary institutions in the country.

"For this reason we strongly encourage Nigerians with orthopadic cases that they should no longer patronise the traditional bone setters as they rather compound and end up damaging these cases beyond repairs", he said.

Ikpeme said that there are many Nigerians who can no longer walk properly or make use of their hands any more because traditional bone setters were not able to fix the broken limbs.

The head of the UCTH casualty section cited the case of a particular young woman who had a fractured arm but was persuaded by her people to patronise the bone-setters.

"After three months with the traditional bone setters, she has just returned to us with her arm in a very bad state. We are going to try our best possible to see possibility of fixing it.

"Unlike us, the traditional bone-setters don't have the modern equipment, expertise  and assorted medication that can attack viruses within the affected bones and specific drugs that can help nurture the bones to normalcy. Victims should therefore look for orthopaedic surgeons to fix their limbs", he advised.

HEALTH NEWS: War against HIV and AIDS will end soon...

Victory is within reach in the global fight against HIV and AIDS, according to new research.

Within two years, there will be a tipping point when the number of people receiving anti-viral HIV drugs is greater than the number of new infections.

Campaigners said the milestone would have been 'unimaginable' a decade ago and predicted this could be the generation that began to make this global killer history.

By 2015, the number of people newly added to treatment is forecast to be 1.9million, compared with 1.7million new infections.

'The strong leadership being shown by many African countries must be matched by others, and we all need to work together to ensure that treatment and prevention services reach everyone who needs them.'

Sub-Saharan Africa is more severely affected than anywhere else, with an estimated 69 per cent of the people living with HIV in the world.

The One report found 16 countries in the region have already reached the milestone, with Ghana, Malawi and Zambia leading the way.

But experts warned that global efforts in treating Aids are still falling up to £3billion short of the £15billion needed each year.

Within two years the number of people receiving treatment is expected to exceed the number of new infections.

MEDICAL JOKE: Testing! Testing! Testing!

Morning Healthy People!! Here is a nice Joke to start your day...

A man goes to the doctor and complains that his wife can't hear him. "How bad is it?" the doctor asks. "I have no idea," the husband says. "Well, please test her.

Stand 20 feet away from her and say something. If she doesn't hear you, get closer and say the same thing.

Keep moving closer and closer and repeating the comment until she does hear you. That way we'll have an idea of her range of hearing loss." So the man goes home and sees his wife in the kitchen chopping up vegetables for dinner.

From 20 feet away: "What are we having for dinner?" No answer. From 10 feet: Same thing.

From 5 feet: Same thing. Finally, he's standing right behind her: "What's for dinner?" She turns around, looks at him and says:"For the FOURTH time, BEEF STEW! (Lol)

In a report by HealthNewsNG.com, the much anticipated first Biomedical HIV Prevention Forum officially kicked off today in Abuja with participants from across the world in attendance.

The forum with the theme "Getting To Zero: The Biomedical Way" is organized by the New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS) in collaboration with the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Institute of Public Health (IPH) of the Obafemi Awolowo University, UNAIDS, Society for Family Health (SFH) and other stakeholders in HIV and AIDS in Nigeria.

Speaking on how the world could achieve a HIV-free generation, Prof. Sagay from the AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) said the target is an achievable task that would involve various stakeholders. He added that several steps are needed. They include male involvement, family planning, combination prevention, task shifting, decentralization and private sector engagement.

He decried the wide gap in ARV/ART coverage in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV in Nigeria. While the level of coverage is 22% in Nigeria, he said South Africa has been able to scale up its coverage to about 88%.

In his remark, Dr Ibekwe from NACA, described the recently unveiled Nigerian President's HIV plan as ambitious, he however noted that the plan could provide leadership needed for change in Nigeria's epidemic.

He added the nation is yet to meet the Abuja declaration target of 15% of National budget to health.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Gunmen storm Hospital in Ekiti State Demanding for Babies!!!

Really weird!!! What would gunmen be looking for in a Hospital for God's sake... Got this story from the Punch Newspaper..

Five gunmen, suspected to be ritualists on Sunday invaded the government hospital in Ado-Ekiti, demanding for new born babies.

A senior health officer, who pleaded anonymity, said that the armed men invaded the hospital located along Irona area at about 1am and suddenly began molesting medical officials on night duty.

According to the officer, the invaders, who were fully armed, are rhetorically demanding for the whereabouts of a particular baby, said to have been delivered earlier in the day.

"They got more annoyed when they were told that no baby was available in the hospital as at the time they came, it angered then the more and they went berserk," the officer said.

This development, NAN learnt angered the men who beat up the hospital staff and injured some of them.

"As a senior person on duty, I tried to convince them that all new born babies have been discharged from the centre in the last couple of days, but they refused to be convinced.

"This angered them the more and they descended on the staff beating us, some of them were busy ransacking the place in search of babies," the source said.

When contacted, the Chairman of Ado Local Government, Mr. Tope Olanipekun confirmed the incident, saying "this is a new twist to crime in the area."

The chairman said that he had already ordered that night duty be suspended in all the hospitals in the council, pending when tight security measures, which would include fencing of all health centres be taken.

Could they be ritualists or Kidnappers?

HEALTH GOSSIP: Garki General Hospital Abuja, undertakes 6 Kidney transplants!!!

This hospital happens to be close to my Home in Abuja. It is located in the central area of the Federal Capital Territory adjacent Festival Road Nursery and Primary School... The Hospital was renovated some years back and was privatized... Ever since then, the hospital kept on growing..

According to Leadership Newspaper, A team of surgeons at the Garki Hospital, Abuja, has carried out six successful kidney transplants at the hospital to date. The feat was achieved at the weekend.

The hospital is owned by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and managed through public-private initiative.

The lead surgeon, Prof. Nadey Hakim, said the effort would discourage Nigerians with similar health challenge from travelling abroad where they spend so much money that would have been invested in the country.

"Nigeria is a rich country and I think it is better for Nigeria to invest in their own country instead of traveling abroad for the same treatment and paying a fortune," Hakim who is a former world president of the International College of Surgeons said, while commending the leadership of the hospital for the initiative.

The medical director of the hospital, Dr. Elijah Miner, attributed the feat to public-private sector collaboration, saying, "the reason we have been able to come this far is because of the public-private partnership.

That is why we have been able to achieve all this very quickly. We just came up with the idea and within nine months, we have been able to achieve all this."

He said with the success recorded, Nigerians will no longer have to travel abroad for such treatment anymore.

Miner who decried the high cost of drugs required by those who had done the surgery to maintain kidney function after transplant appealed to the government to step in and support them.

Also speaking, the group medical adviser of the hospital, Dr. Ibrahim Wada, reiterated the essence of the PPP initiative saying it was the only way for Nigeria to bridge the gap and stand among other countries that had achieved medical feats.

HEALTH NEWS: Artificial blood may soon be in use following successful research!!!

Researchers have claimed success in conducting the world's first artificial blood experiment in a venue eerily associated with the legendary bloodthirsty Dracula.

The researchers held the experiment in Cluj-Napoca in Transylvania, a city in Romanian province that legends had long linked to the infamous vampire.

"People have been trying to produce artificial blood oxygen carriers as temporary substitutes for blood, for decades now. There are several groups working on the same topic at this time, and to my knowledge there is, even, a product approved for limited human use in South Africa," Romanian researcher Dr. Radu Silaghi-Dumitrescu said in an email to tech site Mashable.

"Doctors can use the artificial blood to reduce infection rates during blood donation, and to supply lost stores in patients for several hours or even up to a day," it quoted Silaghi-Dumitrescu as saying in an interview with Medical Daily.

He added this could eventually lead to "instant blood" where one merely adds water to a portable tube to get artificial blood.

Silaghi-Dumitrescu and his team found their blood formula had no harmful side effects, following years of experiments on mice, the report said.

Citing a report from Medical Daily, Mashable said the team plans to test the artificial blood on human subjects in the next few years.

According to Mashable, the blood is derived from hemerythrin, a protein extracted from sea worms, along with water and salts.

"Hemerythrin transports oxygen in the blood of marine invertebrates, while previous artificial-bloods tests relied on hemoglobin, a red protein that transfers oxygen in the blood of almost all living organisms," it said.

Although hemoglobin cannot withstand physical and chemical stress when introduced into a living organism, hemerythrin is more resilient and suitable for transfusion, it added.

The team found its artificial blood had no apparent health risks to the mice.

Now, it is working toward getting approval from Romania's clinical trial regulatory agency to test the blood on humans.

HEALTH NEWS: Bill Gates complains about insurgency in the North of Nigeria, as it is hampering the fight against Polio!!!

Just some days after he was conferred a National award by President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Bill Gates, has said the unrest in the northern part of the country is hampering his foundation's awareness and eradication campaign against polio virus in the country.

In a report by Vanguard Newpaper, Gates made the remarks yesterday when he visited Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State in Ikeja. He was accompanied on the visit by President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and top functionaries of the foundation.

According to him, half of the children in the North-Eastern part of the country were yet to be vaccinated as a result of unrest in the area.

Gates, who commended the leadership role of the governor especially in transforming the state in the last seven years, disclosed that his foundation in partnership with Dangote Foundation had raised $6 billion to fight polio virus in some countries such as Nigeria, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Somalia and Syria, which he said, were still plagued with the virus.

Gates, however, expressed optimism that the virus would be eradicated, noting that he had partnered the Dangote Foundation to kick polio out of Africa.

Fashola in his remarks at the occassion said: "The tragedy of the existence of wild polio virus in this part of the world as one of the few parts is something we are not proud of.

"However, I think we are in the march towards eradicating the virus. We have not put the voices of the survivors in the forefront of the campaign and that the voices of the policy-makers have drowned those of the victims themselves."

HEALTH NEWS: Patients with High risk of Heart attack can now be identified earlier, Research shows!!!

Amongst many new innovations in the Medical Field, a new test developed by Edinburgh University, uses a PET-CT or PET/CT (Positron Emission Tomography- Computed Tomography) scanner and has been trialled by researchers at the institution.

In a research report published in The Lancet on Monday, the scientists outline how fat that builds up in arteries and threatens to rupture them, are lit up in a scan.

According to Dr Nik Joshi, from the university, said: "We have shown, for the first time, high risk fatty plaques - on the verge of potentially causing a heart attack - can be detected on a PET-CT scan in the arteries supplying the heart with blood.

"If we are now able to identify patients at highest risk of having a heart attack, we could possibly take steps to prevent this catastrophic event. This could fundamentally change the way we approach and manage these patients, reducing their risk of a future heart attack."

The study, funded by the British Heart Foundation and Chief Scientist Office, looked at two groups of patients - 40 people who had just had a heart attack and 40 people with angina and at risk of a heart attack.

Around 90% of the heart attack patients had a lit-up area in one of their blood vessels, corresponding exactly to the location of the plaque that caused their heart attack.

The researchers found about 40% of patients with angina also had a plaque that lit up yellow, as well as high-risk features suggesting a heart attack may be imminent, and aggressive treatment would be required.

Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director at the British Heart Foundation, said: "Being able to identify dangerous fatty plaques likely to cause a heart attack is something that conventional heart tests can't do. This research suggests that PET-CT scanning may provide an answer - identifying 'ticking time bomb' patients at risk of a heart attack.

"These are exciting data - being able to prospectively identify patients at the highest risk of a heart attack and provide treatment to prevent this would be a significant step forward in the clinical management of this group. It is important therefore that these findings are further tested to determine their best clinical use."

According to Leadership Newspaper, The Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT Fund), a new public health partnership that is bringing Japanese know-how and investment to the global fight against infectious diseases, on Friday announced the grants of US$5.7 million to
six global partnerships working on innovative drugs and vaccines against malaria, tuberculosis and Chagas disease.

This was contained in a press statement made available to journalists in New York by Dr. BT Slingsby, the Executive Director of the GHIT, who stated that the agency's six new investments in potential treatments for malaria, tuberculosis and Chagas disease, infections that afflict roughly one in seven of our world's population, were a definitive step forward for, and a clear exemplification of, Japanese innovation and its application to global health.

"For malaria, a disease that sickens more than 200 million people each year and kills more than 650,000, the GHIT Fund will fund four new research and development (R&D) investments.

The statement pressed further that a recently published study had revealed that the vaccine showed efficacy against severe malarial infections, making it a promising malaria vaccine candidate.

"In the initial trials in a malaria-prone region of Uganda, however, many vaccinated adult individuals failed to generate a strong immune response to the original BK-SE36" it noted.

It further said that the research team would use the new grant to test whether adding CpG, a substance known as an adjuvant, could boost the subjects' response to the vaccine, stressing that researchers agreed that a vaccine was desperately needed to check malaria's spread in the developing world, as part of a multipronged approach that includes other tools like bednets, sprays and antimalarial drugs.

HEALTH ARTICLE: ALL MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA (comprehensive list)!!!

According to the Medical and Dental Council Nigeria (MDCN), there are about 31 Medical Schools in Nigeria. However, the number is on the rise with some medical schools still in the building process for example, Covenant University Medical School (owned by Living Faith and founded by Bishop Oyedepo) and Anchor University Medical School( owned by Deeper life bible Church founded by Pastor Kumuyi) but to mention a few.... Well these are the ones I know that are in the Pipeline. If you noticed, both are private Universities. This goes a long way to show the impact private Universities are making with regards training new Doctors. This does not however, undermine the fact that Government owned Medical Schools are still the best in Nigeria.

Medical School training remains the prerequisite for every Doctor.. This has been the duties of several Medical Schools within the country....

NOTE: Babcock University School of Medicine is functional but quite expensive. Rumor has it that, it costs about 3 million naira per session. It has not been placed in the MDCN list of Medical Schools yet.

In the List above,  Most of the Med. Schools have full accreditation i.e., they can graduate Doctors. However, the last four have partial accreditation. Also, the College of Health Sciences, Igbinedion University was suspended in April, 2013 from admitting or graduating students due to failure to meet the required standards.. In 2011, about 11 Med Schools were suspended, of  which, only Igbinedion was recalcitrant.. Hence, It is good to know what medical school is fully or partial accredited.. CLICK HERE TO KNOW THEM

As i said earlier, Many are still in the Pipeline... And Yes!!! Mine is also in the Pipeline (AMEN).

Perhaps You know of any other Medical School in Nigeria that has not been Mentioned here, please do leave it as a comment ...Thanks

HEALTH GOSSIP: Gov Chime's wife is suffering from hallucination and depression!!!

According to HealthNewsNG.com, The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has confirmed that the wife of Enugu State Governor, Clara Chime, is battling with occasional "hallucinations and depression". It however said she is conscious of her environment and relates well with those she encounters.

Professor Bem Angwe, NHRC's Executive Secretary, revealed this yesterday while releasing his agency's preliminary report on its ongoing investigation into a petition by the governor's wife.

She petitioned the commission, complaining of rights abuses, including being allegedly held incommunicado by her husband against her wish.

Angwe said he led a team of the commission's investigators to Enugu on Thursday to ascertain the true position of things. He said in the course of the commission's investigation, the team had private and group interactions with the Governor, Sullivan Chime, his wife, his mother-in-law, Mrs Patience Igwe, and some other relatives of the couple.

According to him, the First Lady is suffering from some medical conditions; that she has had to stay in a medical facility and that she had lost confidence in the medical expert currently handling her case.

Angwe said: "The investigating team held a five-hour meeting with Governor Chime, Mrs Chime, Dr. Jide Chime (the governor's sibling), Dr. Aham Agumoh (who has been treating Mrs Chime) and Tony Igwe (the complainant's elder brother) during which the complainant had an opportunity to state her case and also respond to the issues raised by her husband.

"Dr. A. Uzegu, a London-based consultant psychiatrist and forensic examiner, who is the doctor the complainant prefers, also joined the meeting through teleconference.
"Both parties have agreed that Mrs Chime has medical challenges, but have disagreement over how to handle her medical condition. The complainant told the commission that she has lost confidence in the physician presently handling her condition and no longer wants him to treat her.

"She further requested to have medical opinion of other medical doctors acceptable to her. Both parties have agreed that the commission assemble a team of independent medical experts to review her medical condition and advice on further steps to be taken in respect of her treatment".

HEALTH GOSSIP: UBTH successfully conducts second stem cell transplantation!!

The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) in Edo State, Nigeria on Friday said it had conducted the second successful stem cell transplant for a 15- year-old sickle cell patient in Benin.

Dr Nosakhare Bazuaye, consultant Haematologist and Coordinator of UBTH stem cell transplant centre, disclosed
this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

NAN reports that UBTH is the only hospital in Nigeria and West African performing such transplant.

Bazuaye, who spoke on behalf of the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Michael Ibadin, said the operation was successful and that the patient's genotype
had change from SS to AA.

"In 2011, we announced our first transplant for a patient that had sickle cell disease. "We have done a second successful transplant for a 15- year-old boy whose transplant took place 102 days ago.

"The first patient that was transplanted is two years post transplant now, his hemoglobin is AA and he is perfectly okay.

"By WHO regulations, patients are certified fit after 100 days of transplant, so the current patient is over a hundred day and his genotype is AA and has not had any crises since then. "So with this, we are now discharging him to go home", the consultant said.

Bazuaye said that the second transplant had to be conducted after two years due to inadequate facilities and financial constraints of the patients. "We have about three per cent of Nigerians who have this sickle cell disease.

"We are hoping that the Federal Government and NGOs would put some money into establishing an international centre in UBTH to provide this mode of therapy for most Nigerians.

"We are happy that we have successfully done a second transplant.

"We are hopeful that with assistance from the Federal Government and NGOs, we will do more transplants and make transplant free and within the reach of most Nigerians.''

The haematologist said that the therapy could also be used to cure other diseases like blood cancers, bone marrow failure, cancers of the bones and combined immune deficiency syndrome in children.

"For sickle cell transplant, it is better we do the transplant when the children are below 15 years old because at that age, there are usually less complications.

He said that the first patient was paid for by the hospital, adding that "we are expecting that subsequent patients should pay for their transplants.

"The second patient has been able to pay some part of the medical bills, and we are hoping that the remaining part of the bill would be paid and then he can go home," he said.

HEALTH GOSSIP: HIV 'Invisibility Cloak' Discovery could provide new measures for treating the disease..

Hope changes everything!! The word 'Hope' has been a driving force in the long fight against this disease called HIV/AIDS.. I am certain that PLWHA(people living with HIV/AIDS) will agree to that.. From better antiretrovirals to the possibility of a HIV vaccine. It brings to mind that word HOPE. Well here is another reason to be HOPEFUL..

Scientists have discovered a molecular invisibility cloak that enables HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to hide inside cells of the body without triggering the body's natural defense systems.

Their study shows how 'uncloaking' the virus using an experimental drug triggers an immune response that stops the virus from replicating in cells grown in the laboratory. The findings could lead to new treatments and help to improve existing therapies for HIV infection.

The innate immune system is the body's first line of defence against infection and incorporates an alarm system present in all cells of the body that detects the presence of 'foreign' material from invading bacteria and viruses. When the alarm is tripped, the infected cell begins an antiviral programme and sends out warning signals to alert other cells that a virus is around.

HIV infects vital cells of the immune system, so its ability to replicate undetected without triggering this alarm system has puzzled scientists since the discovery of the virus.

The team identified two molecules inside host cells that are recruited by HIV after infection that stop the virus from reproducing its genetic material too early. The effect is to shield the virus from the alarm system and stop the innate immune system from kicking into action.

In the absence of these molecules, whether caused by depletion from infected cells or by blocking their recruitment using an experimental drug, HIV is exposed to the alarm system and an antivirus immune response is triggered. Targeting the cloaking molecules and not the virus itself makes it much more difficult for the virus to mutate and become resistant to this treatment approach, a significant problem with standard HIV therapies.

Professor Greg Towers, a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow at UCL and lead author of the study, said: "HIV is extremely adept at hiding from our body's natural defences, which is part of the reason the virus is so dangerous. Now we've identified the virus' invisibility cloak, and how to expose it, we've uncovered a weakness that could be exploited for new HIV treatments.

"There's a great deal more research needed, but the potential for this approach is huge - as a possible treatment in itself, but also as a complement to existing therapies. We're also interested to see whether blocking these cloaking molecules can help to boost immune responses to experimental vaccines against HIV or be used to protect against HIV transmission. "The hope is that one day we may be able develop a treatment that helps the body to clear the virus before the infection is able to take hold."

The experimental drug used in the study is based on cyclosporine, a drug that is widely used to prevent organ rejection in transplant patients because of its ability to dampen the immune response. Cyclosporines have been shown to block the replication of HIV and other viruses but are not suitable for treating infected patients because of their negative effects on the immune system.

The team used a modified version of the drug, which blocks the effects of the two cloaking molecules without suppressing immune activity.

Understanding how HIV interacts with the body's own defences might just be crucial for developing the best approaches to therapy."
