HEALTH GOSSIP: (WEIRD) Hospital uses shipping container as morgue... TEARS OF A WIDOWER...!

According to sources, when the mortuary was visited, many of the bodies which were carelessly kept were already decomposing – fluid from the bodies kept in the upper cabinets was dripping freely on the bodies below.

One bereaved husband, who had to remove the body of his wife due to the shabby way it was handled, described seeing a body so badly decomposed that its head was almost severed from its body.

The general filth and the smell of decaying bodies that pervades the area is a bazaar for swarm of flies. Visitors also fear the mortuary posses a serious health concern to the environment as well as workers, patients and other inhabitants of the area in and around the hospital.

For instance, the hospital's canteen and catering services department is just few metres from the makeshift mortuary.

"By the time I got there I could see them washing dead bodies in the public just by the side of the morgue. When the container was opened, what I saw was unbefitting for the body of a dead goat or dog," said Olu Famuyiwa, a septuagenarian who removed the body of his wife to another mortuary after it was treated shabbily.

"When the mortuary was open, I saw about six or seven bodies already swollen, smelling and water dropping from them. Because of the tip we gave the attendants they cleared the upper shelf for my wife's body. As we were about to leave, they asked me to buy a white linen cloth the following day to cover her body. I gave them N1000 to buy the cloth, as I wasn't ready to come all the way from Lagos just for that purpose.

But to my surprise, embarrassment and humiliation, when I returned she was completely naked except for a piece of perforated cloth used to cover her private part. Don't forget that they collected money from me to buy white cloth," he continued.

He also complained that his wife wasn't properly embalmed as her complexion quickly turned unusually dark and had started swelling. He said if he didn't remove his wife's body when he did, it would have further decomposed.

The last body – lying on the floor of the container – its head was almost severed from its body due to decomposition. I decided there and then to remove the body of my wife but because it was on a Saturday, we had to wait till Monday to remove her body," he added.

Standing just outside the canteen, one can clearly see unclad bodies sprawled on the mortuary's cabinet through its unclosed door. Water used in bathing the bodies is poured on the ground where it can easily flow into shallow wells, which are common in the area.

Ahmed Anuoluwapo, a mortician at a privately run mortuary, Omega Funeral Home, said proper disposal of water and other materials used in bathing the dead is an essential part of a mortician's job so as not to expose inhabitants of the area around a mortuary to diseases.

"It is important that the bath water is collected and drained properly so it doesn't find its way to public supply of water," Mr. Anuoluwapo said. "If the water used in mortuary gets into a stream, for instance, it could lead to serious health implications."

Bizarrely, while bodies were allowed to rot in the shipping container, a recently constructed mortuary sat about two metres away, unused.

Absolutely weird......!!!

HEALTH GOSSIP: Man with worst case of Neurofibromatosis ever undergoes Surgery..!!

As a Clinical Med. Student, I have seen a number of 'NFs'.. But this case is really the worst one can ever see. It brings to mind a character in the movie 'Pirates of the Caribbean'.*apologies* Please read on to know what finally happened to him... And don't forget to leave your comments or questions..

A Chinese man has undergone surgery to remove a 3.3lb (1.5kg) tumour from his face.

Huang Chuncai, 37, from Hunan province, has been dubbed 'China's Elephant Man'. He suffers from an extreme case of neurofibromatosis, which has caused large tumours on his face that have completely distorted his features.

Neurofibromatosis is the name for a number of genetic conditions that cause swellings or lumps.

Although many people who have the condition inherit it from one of their parents, up to 50 per cent develop it randomly from a gene mutation before they are born.

He is said to have the world's worst recorded case of the condition.

On Wednesday he underwent another round of surgery at a hospital in Guangzhou to remove the tumour from his left cheek.

The operation was successful and he will now have two more to try and get his condition under control.

Am indeed happy for HIM...

HEALTH GOSSIP: Nigerian Doctor attacks patient following disagreement over Diagnosis..!

In a previous post, I wrote about a British Doctor who was suspended for cresting his initials on a patient's liver. Well, its BRITAIN again but this time its a NIGERIAN DOC.

According to reports by Daily Mail, Dr Abiodun Olumuyiwa Bale attacked a female patient after she disagreed with his diagnosis. He is accused of having grabbed Sheena Cunningham as she tried to leave his consultation room in tears after they argued over treatment for a facial condition. Bale, 42, denied assault when he appeared in court but was found guilty after a two-day trial.

Bale, who qualified as a doctor at the University of Lagos in 1995, worked as a gynaecologist in his home country before coming to Britain and registering with the General Medical Council in 2006.

He was given a licence to practise here in November 2009 and was on a placement, for speciality GP training, at Hyndburn Medical Practice in Accrington, Lancashire, when the assault happened on March 26.

Eddie Harrison, prosecutor, said Bale had asked Mrs Cunningham to come into the practice after a telephone consultation about a problem with her face, during which she had become distressed.

When she arrived, the doctor told Mrs Cunningham she might need to call for an ambulance if her condition deteriorated later when the surgery was closed.

Mr Harrison told Burnley Magistrates' Court: 'She didn't want to do this and at this point he raised his voice.'

Mrs Cunningham was frightened, got up to leave and said she wanted a second opinion, the court was told. '[Bale] became agitated and, as she stepped out, he grabbed her hand to prevent her closing the door,' Mr Harrison said.

'He then grabbed her by the forearm with both hands and tried to drag her back into the room. She screamed and shouted at him to get off her arm. This attracted the attention of another doctor and two cleaners. The other doctor told Bale to go back into his office and then escorted Mrs Cunningham out of the surgery.'

The court was told that a week earlier the GP, who lives in Manchester, 'flipped' at another patient, shouting at her: 'For God's sake, I have other people to see besides you.'

'She got up to leave and he tried to grab her hand. She felt frightened and vulnerable,' said Mr Harrison.

Bale claimed the incident with Mrs Cunningham was a misunderstanding, saying: 'I'm a doctor, not a thug.'

But Mr Harrison said: 'There was no mistake or misunderstanding. She was crying so loudly that two ladies outside heard her crying.'

After the allegations, the GMC placed conditions on how Bale worked, including allowing him to carry out consultations only if another qualified medical practitioner was present.

He was given a six-month conditional discharge but will face a disciplinary hearing at work and could lose his job,
the paper said.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Surgeon suspended for cresting initials on Patient's LIVER!

A British surgeon is currently under investigation after his suspension over allegations that he cresting his initials onto a patient's liver.

Trouble started for the surgeon, Simon Bramhall after a colleague discovered the initials "SB" on the internal organ during a follow-up operation at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, central England, newspapers reported.

According to a statement signed by the hospital's managing trust: "Following an allegation of misconduct, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust has suspended a surgeon while an internal investigation is completed".

The Daily Mail newspaper said Bramhall used non-toxic argon gas to sear his initials onto the liver.

Some Doctors are really funny. Cresting your initials on your patient's internal organ, THAT'S WEIRD. What a means of advertising your Handiwork..lol

HEALTH ARTICLE: PYROPTOSIS not APOPTOSIS is responsible for AIDS(research)...!

The difference between HIV infection and full-blown AIDS is, in large part, the massive die-off of the immune
system's CD4 T-cells. But researchers have only observed the virus killing a small portion of those cells, leading to a
longstanding question: What makes the other cells disappear? New research shows that the body is killing its own cells in a little-known process. What's more, an
existing, safe drug could interrupt that self-destruction, thereby offering a way to treat AIDS.

The destructive process has caught scientists by surprise. "We thought HIV infects a cell, sets up a virus production
factory and then the cell dies as a consequence of being overwhelmed by virus. But there are not enough factories to explain the massive losses," says Warner Greene, director of virology and immunology at the Gladstone Institutes, whose team published two papers today in Science and Nature describing the work.

Greene suspects that researchers in the past failed to notice the process because they were looking in the wrong place. Instead of studying active CD4 T cells in the blood, his team examined spleen and tonsil tissue, where most cells are in a resting state. When HIV enters a resting cell, it transcribes its genes into DNA, but then hits a dead end: the cell's machinery isn't available to finish the replication process.

This part of the story had been known for years, but Greene's team discovered that something very surprising happens next. "Instead of that being the end of the story, cells detect that DNA in their cytoplasm and launch an immune response against it, and that immune response results in the death of those cells."

The response is a self-destruct protocol called pyroptosis. In contrast to the better-known apoptosis, in which cells die quietly without triggering inflammation, pyroptosis is "not a bland, but a fiery death," Greene says. These cells spew inflammation-causing chemicals as they die, attracting more T-cells that can then become infected themselves by the newly freed HIV. "In a bacterial infection, recruiting all these cells might be a good strategy for containing the infection," Greene says, but with HIV a vicious cycle of infection results. Pyroptosis also explains why AIDS is associated with high levels of inflammation.

Experiments by Greene's team showed that blocking a key component of pyroptosis could stop the cell death entirely; they also identified the protein that senses viral DNA to kick off the process. After studying the pathway in cultured spleen and tonsil tissue, they had an opportunity to confirm the findings in a patient's freshly removed lymph node, stained for their target proteins and viewed under the microscope. It showed the traditional virus replication happening in cells at the center of the node and resting cells dying all around. To Greene, the sight was unbelievable: "We could see this pyroptotic pathway playing out like nobody's business. In this one snapshot, we could see what we had been working on for eight years."

There's good news though: Greene estimates 95 percent of the cells that die in HIV infections are killed through pyroptosis, so the findings raise hope for a new type of treatment that could prevent HIV from progressing into AIDS. "Inhibiting activation of the immune system is not a new concept, but this gives us a new pathway to target," says Robert Gallo, director of the Institute of Human Virology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study. He warns that other pathways may be at work that are still unknown but that this one is promising if it truly accounts for the large percentage of T cell deaths.

And in fact, a drug already exists that can block pyroptosis. Known as VX-765, it was tested years ago by Vertex Pharmaceuticals as a treatment for chronic seizure disorder. A trial showed that it wasn't effective enough against seizures, but it was safe for humans. "Now it's just sitting on a shelf waiting for a disease to cure," says Greene, who is trying to arrange a phase II trial to test the drug in HIV patients."

This is solid, interesting, useful science in the field of HIV pathogenesis," Gallo says, although he questions whether blocking the cells' death might lead them to later replicate the virus. (Greene believes the cells will degrade the viral DNA and recover.)

Greene envisions the drug, if it proves effective, as a stopgap for patients in developing countries who don't have easy access to antiretroviral drugs. It could also be an addition to such therapy. Because it targets inflammation, it could reduce the risk of aging-related diseases in patients with AIDS, who are at risk for heart attacks and kidney disease, for example, a decade earlier than noninfected peers.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Being HIV positive is no longer a death sentence...!

Being HIV positive is no longer the death sentence it once was, as life expectancy of those receiving treatment is approaching that of the general population.

Researchers found a 20-year-old HIV-positive adult on antiretroviral therapy (ART) may be expected to live into their early 70s - a life expectancy approaching that of the general U.S. population. However, life expectancy is lower for people with a history of injecting drugs as well as those who are not white.

The life expectancies of nearly 23,000 individuals on ART - which consists of the combination of at lleast three antiretroviral drugs to best suppress the HIV virus andstop the progression of HIV disease - were calculated based on mortality rates in the early to mid-2000s.

Participants in the study, by the North American AIDS Cohort Collaboration on Research and Design and the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, were aged 20 years or older.

The remains what about the Blacks....?

HEALTH GOSSIP: 13-year-old gives birth to triplets. Police hunt 61-year- old man...!!!

A 13-year-old girl has given birth to triplets –fathered by a 61-year-old man.

The scandal has emerged from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic where the man is being hunted by authorities for sexually abusing a child.

The babies – all boys, whom the mother has named Samuel, Joshua and Jovanny – were born prematurely at 34 weeks and are in the intensive care ward at hospital. They weighed 4lbs 2oz, 3lbs 1oz and 3lb 7oz.

However, they are expected to survive. As for the mother, she is said to be 'happy' with her new arrivals.

Victor Calderón, director of the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia Maternity Unit, said the babies are not in any danger, adding they 'are progressing satisfactorily, and they could be released this week'.

The legal age of consent in the Caribbean island nation is 18, yet it has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies in the world.

Nearly 15 per cent of 15-19-year-olds in the
Dominican Republic are mothers, with hundreds of babies born to girls under the age of 15 every year, according to children's right charity ECPAT UK.

The Dominican Republic's Code of Minors has recently been revised and has strengthened provisions against child abuse, including physical and emotional mistreatment, sexual exploitation and child labour, ECPAT UK said.

The offence of child abuse carry a sentence of between 20 to 30 years jail.

HEALTH NEWS: Newly discovered antibodies raise HIV vaccine hopes...!!!

Fresh hopes for an HIV/AIDS vaccine have emerged with the discovery of antibodies that can thwart the virus. Imagining a world without AIDS is a distinct possibility, say scientists who were in New Delhi for a two-day scientific group meeting of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.

Dr Wayne Koff, chief scientific officer in IAVI and a leading figure in the AIDS vaccine research, said scientists have isolated, from HIV-positive donors around the world, a number of antibodies capable of blocking a broad spectrum of HIV variants. Only some infected people produce these antibodies and it takes the body three years to start doing so.

Scientists say the vaccine developed has to give people the right kind of HIV protein that "instructs" the body how to make these antibodies.

"Scientists have mapped the structure of the protein that encases HIV's critical genetic information, a development that could eventually lead to new drugs to fight AIDS.

We now understand what the HIV protein looks like, what the weaknesses are, and where the antibodies can bind them to neutralise the virus," Koff said.

When the antibodies were first isolated from donors, IAVI set out on a worldwide hunt under a project called 'Protocol G'.

In India it was undertaken by an HIV vaccine design programme set up by IAVI and the New Delhi-based Translational Health Science and Technology Institute. Researchers studied 1,800 samples across the world.

"In India, THSTI collected blood samples from 200 HIV-infected persons (who are not on any treatment) and conducted the first round of screening," said Dr Sudhanshu Vrati, head of THSTI's vaccine and infectious disease research centre. "Initial results have picked up four such broadly neutralising antibodies," Vrati added.

The goal is to isolate antibodies that are broadly effective against the HIV subtype predominant in India, said Dr Rajat Goyal, IAVI country director, India.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Tension in UNTH as 120 graduate doctors protest delayed induction...

The aggrieved graduate doctors who were billed to be inducted into the Medical Council, prevented the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Basil Ezeanolue and the Provost, Prof. Basden Onwubere from leaving the venue after only 18 out of the 138 graduates including the two daughters of the Dean (Ezeanolue) were inducted.

The graduates who had been waiting for their induction since August, this year, were given 48 hours notice by the Dean to report for the exercise which marks their formal graduation from the school at 9 am yesterday.

Saturday Vanguard learnt that only 18 of the fresh doctors including the daughters of the Dean were present in the hall at 9 am and the door was shut against others most of who reside at the former site of UNTH in Enugu capital city.

Virtually all the graduates had arrived the venue between 9.00 and 9.10 am but the dean was said to have ordered the security men not to allow them access to the hall despite their pleas.

But soon after the induction of the 18 graduates their aggrieved colleagues barricaded the entrance while some blocked the dean's vehicle from leaving the venue insisting that they should be inducted just as they did to their few colleagues, who were mostly children of the lecturers.

One of the graduate doctors, Kingsley Njoku, told Vanguard that the action of the Dean was premeditated saying their lateness for less than 10 minutes was not enough for him to truncate their induction which he had delayed for about five months.

He said that but for the quick intervention of the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Prof. Bartho Okolo the Dean had earlier collected N70, 000 from each of the medical graduates, a fee he claimed was for professional license.

However, it was gathered that the VC got infuriated over the outrageous amount and demanded that the students be refunded the entire amount charged.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Medical doctor, wife arraigned for operating illegal home for pregnant girls...

The Imo State Police Command on Friday brought a medical doctor, James Ezuma and his wife, Chioma, before an Owerri Magistrates' Court for allegedly operating an illegal home for pregnant women.

Ezuma, 67, is facing an 18-count charge for allegedly keeping 16 pregnant girls in an illegal home with the intent to sell their babies after delivery to prospective buyers.

The accused was arrested on Nov. 24 in Owerri for allegedly abducting a day-old baby delivered by one Chinaza Nnachi, 19, in the premises of the home owned by the doctor.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Julius Onyemucheya, said the accused committed an offence punishable under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Law Enforcement and Administration Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 as applicable in Imo.

The counsel also said the accused murdered a day-old baby for rituals by unknown persons and thereby committed an offence punishable by law.

Ezuma was also charged with being in possession of 10 unregistered exotic cars suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained.

His wife, Chioma, was also arraigned with a two count charge of negligence and impersonation.

According to the charge, Chioma was allelged to have administered drugs on Nnachi thereby endangering her life because she was not qualified to administer drugs.

The counsel said the woman was not registered to practice as a nurse or midwife and should not have aided the delivery of the pregnant teenagers.

The defence counsel, Mr Fidelis Eziku, however, pleaded for bail for the accused persons.

The Magistrate, Mrs Comfort Isiguzo, remanded the first accused in prison custody after he pleaded not guilty to the charges, while the second accused was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with one surety in like sum.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Five Babies Delivered At Ongoing Holy Ghost Congress

Mrs. Ruth Kehinde Posu, 25, leaves at New Site around Festac Town in Lagos. She is a member of Living Faith Ministry aka Winners Chapel and was particularly keen on going the current convention of the church at Ota because there was no money for such a venture.

She was nine-month pregnant but had no inkling of how the baby would be born as there was no money even to buy the initial required baby things.

Somehow, she followed some persons to the ongoing Holy Ghost Congress of the Redeemed Christian Church of God where she was delivered of a bouncing baby boy, yesterday. The baby weighed 3 kg.

Mrs Posu is one of the five women who had been delivered of babies during this Holy Ghost Congress.

Narrating her story yesterday, the 25-year-old lady expressed gratitude to the church leadership and particularly the nurses who took her in without even baby pants.

The story of Mrs. Tubi Omolara, 28, was also very intriguing. She travelled from Akute in Ogun State with an abounding faith in God to deliver safely after she had been told by three other doctors that her baby was too big to deliver normally.

She said: All hospitals, I went to had only one verdict for me; and that my baby was too big and so I should prepare for a Caesarian session. Much as I want the baby, we were not preparing for a CS for several reasons."

"So on Monday, the pain was becoming severe, I called my pastor and told him I won't go for a CS and immediately he recommended that he would take me to the camp and at about 6.00 a.m. yesterday I was delivered of a baby
boy."

The baby weighed 4.5 kg to confirm the fears of the earlier doctors. Mrs. Omolara wishes to christen her baby, Oluwasegun funmi (God had given me victory).

Mrs. Itoro Udoh, 34, is a resident of the Redemption Camp whose baby girl arrived at about 9.00 p.m. on the first day of the congress. This is her second baby, she weighed 3.5 kg.

According to her testimony, there were lots of prophecies about the baby before she was born successfully at the Redeemed Maternity at the camp on Monday.

She narrated that several persons had prophesied that she was going to have a still birth but at each of the occasion, they dismissed such prophecies while asking their pastors and other brethren to pray along with them.

She said: "But yesterday (Monday) when I was admitted here, it was like the prophecy was going to come to pass because I just couldn't push even as the nurses were urging me to do so. I was completely out of breadth and it was like I was going but through God's intervention, the baby came out successfully."

As a result of the circumstances of her birth, if given the chance, Mrs. Udoh would want to christen her baby, Highly Favoured.

The story was not different for Mrs. Oluwasusi Oluwaremilekun, 27, who travelled all the way from Ibadan in Oyo State even when she was overdue for delivery. She worships at Royal Priesthood Parish in Ibadan and she had been told that her baby would delay in coming.

She had visited some hospitals in Lagos and the story is similar until she was directed to the Redemption Camp.

Initially she was worried, wondering what would happen if the baby decides to appear in a public bus; but to God be the glory that did not happen and she was delivered safely at about 2.00 a.m. yesterday morning, bringing the number of babies born so far to five. Three boys and two
girls.

In unison, all the four women (the first one had been discharged before we got there) paid glowing tributes to the staff and managers of the maternity home. They commended the vision of setting up a maternity in different parishes of the church were women go for anti-natal and delivery free of charge.

One woman was waiting for her turn as at the time of this visit.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Relapse of 'cured' men shows HIV is far from beaten

HIV has re-emerged in two men who in July appeared to have been freed of the virus and were able to come off their antiretroviral medication.

Known as the Boston patients after the city where they were treated, the men were two of a number of people reported as being virtually cured of HIV this year.

The levels of the virus in their blood became almost undetectable for an extended period of time after a bone marrow transplant.

Others include a baby in Mississippi and a group of 14 people in France known as the Visconti cohort, who were functionally cured of HIV, meaning that although their bodies still had traces of the virus, it was no longer active.

The disappointing news, reported at a meeting of HIV researchers in Miami, Florida, last week, highlights how far we still have to go before we actually cure the disease, despite the progress that has been made recently.

HEALTH GOSSIP: MANDELA DIES AT 95...!!!

On a sad note, the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma has announced the demise of the nation's apartheid warrior and former president, Nelson Mandela at the age of 95.

"He is now resting. He is now at peace," Zuma said. "Our nation has lost its greatest son. Our people have lost a father."

"What made Nelson Mandela great was precisely what made him human," the president said in his late-night address. "We saw in him what we seek in ourselves."
He said Madiba would be given a state burial and all flags in the nation should be flown at half-staff from Friday through that funeral.

The former president had battled health issues in recent months, including a recurring lung infection that led to numerous hospitalizations.

With advancing age and bouts of illness, Mandela retreated to a quiet life at his boyhood home in the nation's Eastern Cape Province, where he said he was most at peace.

Despite rare public appearances, he held a special place in the consciousness of the nation and the world.

HEALTH GOSSIP: Giant Tumour removed from Woman's womb...!!!

Surgeons in Spain have removed a giant tumour from a woman's stomach that was 17 inches long and weighed 3st 9lb.

Dr Eduardo Cazorla, head of the hospital's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, said that in his 20 year career had never dealt with a similar case.

A 3st 9lb tumour (pictured) was removed from a 47-year-old woman's abdomen during a two hour operation in Spain. The tumour was 41cm(oboy!!) long and reached from her pubic bone to her sternum.

The surgical team say giant gynaecological tumours – defined as those weighing more than 1st 8lb – are very rare and that only five similar cases have ever been reported in scientific literature.

The tumour was so large it was also causing her bowel problems, difficulty sleeping, breathing problems and discomfort while walking.

During the operation, surgeons successfully removed the tumour as well as the patient's womb, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

The operation took just two hours and the tumour was found to be benign.

The woman spent five days in hospital and another 20 days recovering at home.

She has now made a full recovery.

HEALTH GOSSIP: HIV patients may be cured soon!!!

Its no more news that a new strain of HIV has evolved...However, while the virus is getting more aggressive, researchers seem to be unraveling the mystery associated with the Virus... Well, here is some good news.

Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine are studying radioimmunotherapy (RIT) to kill off HIV-infected cells.

Dr. Ekaterina Dadachova and colleagues are using highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) to stop the reproduction of the HIV virus. However, diseased cells may still exist in the body prohibiting a lasting cure.

"In an HIV patient on HAART, drugs suppress viral replication, which means they keep the number of viral particles in a patient's bloodstream very low.

However, HAART cannot kill the HIV-infected cells. Any strategy for curing HIV infection must include a method to eliminate viral-infected cells." Dr. Dadachova was quoted as saying.

RIT is also used to treat cancer, but with HAART the therapies can kill all affected cells. Clinical trials have not been done for this study, but it is the next step.

HEALTH NEWS: Government should stop employing Doctors as contract staff...!!

The immediate past chairman, Medical Guild, Lagos State branch, Dr Olumuyiwa Odusote, had said that governments should stop employing doctors as contract staff.

He spoke at their Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Lagos, recently, with the theme: " Exodus of health providers: implication for healthcare delivery system in Nigeria".

"Stop employing doctors as contract staff, this creates job insecurity and lack of dedication as these jobs are used as temporary employment until a better permanent job is secured, " he lamented.

Odusote stressed that Nigeria is producing manpower for developed countries while the health sector is nose diving in the presence of increasing gross revenue expenditure and worsening financial management by the governments.

He noted that out of 65,000 registered medical practitioners in Nigeria, about 35,000 of them practise outside the shore, which in turn have negative impact on the sector.

He advised government at all levels to create better working environment and also improve remuneration for medical doctors in order to reflect the current economic realities within the community, state, nation and the entire world.

Reacting to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Odusote said, some people believe that the scheme has failed while others believe that it is the way to go "but one thing remain incontrovertible, that is the fact that Nigerians continue to die for inability to pay for healthcare services as at when due. Which way Nigerians?, he asked.

"The bottom line is, how can we stop this dangerous slide and return the train to an upward movement," he averred.

HEALTH GOSSIP: New contraceptive PILL FOR MEN has been developed...!!!

What a Woman can do... Definitely a Man can do BETTER...(lol)

A new pill for men could work as a temporary vasectomy and allow men to share the task of family planning without affecting their fertility.

It has been developed by scientists at Monash University in Australia and could mean men could share responsibility for birth control for the first time.

Dr Sabatino Ventura, who led the research, said by blocking two proteins involved in the ejaculation process instead of trying to change a man's hormones or kill off sperm would significantly reduce the potential for harmful side effects. It would also not alter a man's sex drive.

However there are likely to be concerns from women who fear men will fail to take the pill for it to act as a reliable form of birth control(lol).

If the pill is proven to work in men, this would increase the number of contraception options available to them as they currently only have condoms or a permanent surgical vasectomy.

HEALTH NEWS: New HIV strain discovered in West Africa...!!!

According to reports, Swedish researchers have identified a new strain of HIV recently discovered in West Africa, which progresses to AIDS more quickly, reports AFP.

The A3/02 strain combines the two most common HIV strains in Guinea-Bissau and develops into AIDS within five years, up to two-and-a-half years faster than either of its parent strains, said Angelica Palm, one of the scientists behind the study published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. This type of strain, a recombinant, appears when a person becomes infected by two different strains, allowing DNA to fuse and create a new one.

Researchers from Lund University warn in the study that recombinant strains may spread more rapidly, in part from immigration to the United State or Europe, and that there are likely many more that still haven't been identified.

But with this particular strain that was discovered in Guinea-Bissau in 2011, Palm says, "The good news is that as far as we know, the medicines that are available today are equally functional on all different subtypes of variants."

MEDICAL JOKE: AN OBVIOUS DIAGNOSIS....!!!(Must Read)

A young doctor was to take up his new position in a small community hospital in a town.

The retiring older doctor suggested the young one to accompany him on his rounds for a couple of weeks to understand the finer points of practice in a small community and at the same time for him to meet a few patients.

At the first visit to a farmer's house, the farmer's wife complained, "I've been a little sick to my stomach.". The senior doctor thought for a moment or two and said, 'Well I think you've probably been eating too much of bananas , try to cut back on the amount you've been eating and see if that helps"

As they left the young doctor was absolutely surprised and asked his senior , "You didn't even examine that woman. How'd you make your diagnosis so quickly?"

"I didn't have to. I dropped my stethoscope on the floor by mistake and when I bent over to pick it up guess what I saw in the trash bin – at least half dozen banana peels.. That was what was probably making her sick." "oh" the younger doctor said, "Pretty clever, maybe I'll try that at our next house visit".

The next day they did another house visit..
Both spent several minutes talking with a young pretty lady who was complaining of lack of energy and tiredness for the past few days for no real reason. She said " Doc, I'm feeling terribly run down lately, I don't know why "

The older doctor said "Oh, I am sure there is good reason but for someone as youthful as you this cannot be a serious reason"

The young doctor on this responded, " I think sir there is, she is probably been doing too much work for the church, perhaps she cut back a bit and sleep a little more and see if that helps". The girl went slightly red and said nothing and just nodded.

As they left, the senior doc surprised at this said, "Your diagnosis is probably correct, but how did you arrive at it? "

"Well, just like you did at the last house, I also dropped my stethoscope and when I bent down to pick it up, guess what I saw" "What did you see" " I noticed the preacher under the bed!!."(Lol)

HEALTH NEWS: Nigerian Gynecologists urge FG to help reduce Maternal Mortality...!

The Chairman, Lagos State chapter of the Society of Gynaecologists and Obstetrics of Nigeria, Dr. Olurotimi Akinola, has called on the Federal Government to adopt measures that will aid the World Health Organisation meet its maternal death reduction target by 2015.

WHO in the Millennium Development Goal hopes to reduce child mortality in the world by 75 per cent in 2015.

Akinola made this call at a briefing to highlight programmes for SOGON's forthcoming 47th Annual General Meeting in Lagos.

He lamented that Nigeria had one of the highest maternal death rates in the world, describing the current rate of 545 deaths per 100,000 live births as unacceptable.

Akinola said, "The Millennium Development Goal is for the reduction of maternal mortality by 75 per cent in 2015. For us to achieve this, the nation must achieve the maternal mortality of less than 250 women by 100, 000 life birth. Right now, we are boasting of 545 women by 100, 000 life birth.

"We are hoping that since we adopted maternal death review, even if we do not get there, we will not be too far away from getting there. If we had adopted maternal mortality review 10 years ago, our maternal mortality rate would have reduced.

"We hope that since we have adopted the maternal death review, there will be reduction."

Akinola, however,  called on government at all levels to embark on maternal death review to know the circumstances surrounding mothers' death.

He noted that the establishment of  functional primary health centres would reduce death during birth.

HEALTH GOSSIP: A Surgeon has warned Nigerians against visiting traditional Bone setters...!!

In a report by Punch Newspaper, An orthopedic surgeon at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Dr Ikpeme has raised alarm over high rate of damages which traditional bone-setters have done on the limbs of Nigerians and others.

He said it is important for Nigerians to know that there are now better trained medical experts particularly orthopedic surgeons at many of the tertiary institutions in the country.

"For this reason we strongly encourage Nigerians with orthopadic cases that they should no longer patronise the traditional bone setters as they rather compound and end up damaging these cases beyond repairs", he said.

Ikpeme said that there are many Nigerians who can no longer walk properly or make use of their hands any more because traditional bone setters were not able to fix the broken limbs.

The head of the UCTH casualty section cited the case of a particular young woman who had a fractured arm but was persuaded by her people to patronise the bone-setters.

"After three months with the traditional bone setters, she has just returned to us with her arm in a very bad state. We are going to try our best possible to see possibility of fixing it.

"Unlike us, the traditional bone-setters don't have the modern equipment, expertise  and assorted medication that can attack viruses within the affected bones and specific drugs that can help nurture the bones to normalcy. Victims should therefore look for orthopaedic surgeons to fix their limbs", he advised.

HEALTH NEWS: War against HIV and AIDS will end soon...

Victory is within reach in the global fight against HIV and AIDS, according to new research.

Within two years, there will be a tipping point when the number of people receiving anti-viral HIV drugs is greater than the number of new infections.

Campaigners said the milestone would have been 'unimaginable' a decade ago and predicted this could be the generation that began to make this global killer history.

By 2015, the number of people newly added to treatment is forecast to be 1.9million, compared with 1.7million new infections.

'The strong leadership being shown by many African countries must be matched by others, and we all need to work together to ensure that treatment and prevention services reach everyone who needs them.'

Sub-Saharan Africa is more severely affected than anywhere else, with an estimated 69 per cent of the people living with HIV in the world.

The One report found 16 countries in the region have already reached the milestone, with Ghana, Malawi and Zambia leading the way.

But experts warned that global efforts in treating Aids are still falling up to £3billion short of the £15billion needed each year.

Within two years the number of people receiving treatment is expected to exceed the number of new infections.
