SAD: Doctor dies after attending to a Patient

A Lagos-based senior doctor has died shortly after attending to a patient.

Close relations blamed the death of Dr Akingbade of Veritas Clinics Limited, College Road, Ifako-Ijaiye, Lagos on stress, but nonetheless said he had a history of hypertension.

The deceased worked at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for 15 years before retiring as a Senior Medical Officer in 2004, after which he set up his private clinic.

Vanguard learnt that the senior doctor suddenly died in his office in the clinic, after attending to the patient.

One of the nurses on duty at Veritas Clinics Limited on the fateful day, Mrs Toyin Ifesan, narrated: “Our boss died at about 10.30pm shortly after he had closed for consultation.

He went to see a patient on admission. Thereafter, he retired to his office and sat down. A nurse later went in there to ask him to go upstairs, where we have sleeping facilities, to sleep, having been working since morning.

“On getting to the office, the nurse spoke to him but she got no response. She then pushed him, only to find that Dr Akingbade had passed on. The situation attracted everybody in the clinic”.

Nurse Ifesan went on: “He was not sick before death. The only thing we noticed was that, on that day, he was not jovial as he used to be. Unlike him, he talked to the staff without looking at their faces. He looked at the floor while talking to the staff.”

Akingbade would be buried on January 7 after a funeral service at the City of the Lord Church, Ifako-Ijaiye.

CHINA set to end 'one couple, one child' policy by January 1, 2016.

It's official. From January 1, 2016 China will allow two children for every couple.

Chinese lawmakers rubber-stamped the new legislation Sunday during a session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, which governs the country's laws, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported .

"The state advocates that one couple shall be allowed to have two children," according to the newly revised Law on Population and Family Planning.

This effectively dismantles the remnants of the country's infamous one-child policy that had been eased in recent years.

When news of the planned change to the law broke in October, the ruling Communist Party issued the following statement: "To promote a balanced growth of population, China will continue to uphold the basic national policy of population control and improve its strategy on population development.

"China will fully implement the policy of 'one couple, two children' in a proactive response to the issue of an aging population."

IMO STATE: At least 4 persons die daily in private hospitals as goverment hospitals remain closed...!

Death rate in Imo State is rising daily as private hospitals in the state are now being overstretched with patients seeking medical attention, National Mirror investigation has revealed. This is as a result of the closure of state hospitals and Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Owerri shut down by the Federal Government over protracted labour crisis in the centre.

The Federal Government shut down FMC, Owerri following protracted industrial dispute between workers and the Medical Director, Dr. (Mrs.) Angela Uwakwem, while the state government had closed down its hospitals to carry out renovations in them ahead of the takeover by the concessioniers.

As a result, the capacity of some of the private hospitals are being overstretched as their personnel now find it more tasking to give adequate attention to patients who were evacuated from the shut down hospitals.

However, the closure is equally taking its tolls on innocent Nigerians who are being denied access to healthcare services resulting to rise in number of people that die daily.

When National Mirror visited some of the private hospitals in Owerri, it was discovered that at least four patients die on daily basis even though some of the medical directors interviewed claimed that some of the patients were already dead before they were brought to their hospitals.

Also hundreds of patients were seen besieging the hospitals. Some said that they have been waiting for several hours to see doctors.

“It has not been easy for us, we stay in waiting rooms for so long before we get attention, we are patronising the private hospitals to seek cure for our sicknesses as the only alternative because government hospitals have not been working.”

The Proprietor/Medical Director of Saint David Hospital, Owerri, Dr. Davidson Anyanwu blamed the influx of patients to private hospitals to the non functioning of government hospitals, querying how many government hospitals are today working.

“Many of the patients brought to these private hospitals are those abandoned in the government hospitals that could not be attended to because the hospitals are not functional,” he said.

On the rate of death in the private hospitals, he explained that most the patients were already dead before they were brought to the hospitals. “Since we are here to save lives, we will not discharge them from the gate; we hear pleadings of their people.

It is a sad story to be told, considering the problems that has befallen the State's Health sector in the year 2015. Every 'imolite' will agree that it has not been easy. However, we hope the new year brings new and better health care services to the people of Imo state...

MUST READ: ONDO STATE BECOMES NIGERIA'S MEDICAL TOURISM DESTINATION..!

As Nigeria continues to struggle with the realities of the dwindling global oil price, it is unquestionable that the country is desperately in need of an economic diversification plan, which is crucial to her survival.

While several policies, analysis and attempts have been made by leaders and economic analysts in the country on how to diversify the economy in the face of seeming challenges, the health plan designed by Ondo State Government under the leadership of the state’s governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has proven to be among the few concrete examples of steps Nigeria can take in order to ensure her economical emancipation from over reliance on crude oil as a revenue source.

Taking Ondo on the journey to become Nigeria’s medical tourism destination, Mimiko built a comprehensive medical village, which according to him is borne out of the desire to make specialized healthcare services readily available to the people of the state where they live, work and play and also to provide world-class, tertiary specialized surgical and emergency care which adheres to the best international practices within an integrated healthcare system.

The MEDICAL VILLAGE which is well equipped with state-of-the-art health facilities is located in Ondo Town, encompassing about 4 kilometers from the city of Akure and 116 kilometres from Benin in Ondo Town plays host to the Mother and Child Hospital, Kidney Care Centre, the Gani Fawehinmi Diagnostic Centre and the University of Medical Sciences (First of its kind in Africa). There is also a state-of-the-art emergency Communication Centre, a Histopathology and Forensic Centre which are yet to fully take off (AWESOME).

ONDO STATE TRAUMA AND SURGICAL CENTRE
The Ondo State Trauma and Surgical Centre is a rapidly evolving surgical specialty based centre aimed at providing world-class tertiary comprehensive surgical services to the people of Ondo State, surrounding environs and Nigeria in General.

It has since continued to improve and augment services, infrastructure and personnel to include Paediatric Surgery, Urology, Maxillo – facial Sugery and Opthalmology. The centre has carried out over 3000 surgeries as at November 2015.

It serves as a referral area for mainly the General Hospitals in Ondo State and parts of Osun, Ekiti and Edo State. It also receives referrals from across Nigeria and patients from other parts of the country(very good).

The Ondo State Trauma and Surgical Centre runs 24hours emergency services in General Surgery, Burns, Plastic and reconstructive surgery, Orthopaedics and Trauma, Neurologic surgery, Paediatric surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Anaesthesia, pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Radio diagnosis.

The Trauma Centre liaise closely with sister hospitals; Ondo State Kidney Care Centre, Gani Fawehinmi Diagnostic services and Mother and Child Hospital with which Mimiko Government constitute a Medical Village for ancillary support services including Obstetrics, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Radiology and Laboratory support.

It also runs out – patient surgical services and offer our patients elective day – case surgeries with efficient in – patient care, including oncology, endocrine, hepatobiliary, breast surgery, a special Burn Centre and intensive care.

NOTE THIS- At the Trauma Centre, care is provided to patients before billing and this emphasizes the true intention of the government, ‘saving lives’

ONDO STATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES AGENCY (ODEMSA)
To further straighten the emergency medical services, the state government established  ODEMSA with the mandate to provide emergency rescue, pre-hospital and hospital services to road crash victims in the state.

5 fully functional Accident Rescue Stations along the highways across Ondo state were built; Ore, Bolorunduro, Ilara, Owo and Oka-Akoko. 100 Extricators and 100 paramedics work 24hrs in all the stations and the response time to accident scenes is 15mins. Each station has an Advanced TRAUMA Life Support Vehicle equipped with oxygen and other essentials needed sustain accident victims while they are being conveyed to the nearest hospital or the Trauma Center.

I believe every state in Nigeria can copy this great idea and implement it to the fullest... what is your take on this?

Flood has claimed the lives of more than 280 people, including 18 patients in a major hospital in India after it knocked out electricity, including generators and switched off ventilators.

The 18 patients were in the intensive care unit when a power outage affected ventilators in the hospital in Chennai, a city of 9.6 million population in India.

However, while most Chennai hospitals struggled with no power and lack of communications, another mega hospital in the city, Apollo hospital was proactive and had management plan to help save many lives.

Viswanathan stated, “Apollo took the lead by working round the clock for forty-five days to ensure physical-medical aid was provided indiscriminately to all who knocks its door.

“Less than 24 hours that Apollo hospital was inundated with 4-8 fits of high water, it was almost impossible for people to obtain treatment but a dedicated team of doctors and auxiliary staff beat the odd of the flood disaster to serve patients by working round the clock.”

Maari, a survivor from the flood disaster said ‘’I have been to many hospitals but only Apollo hospital came to my rescue by offering me medical relieve from my pain’’

LADIES: The Effect of Waist trainers..!

Waist trainer, body shapers and corsets are important item for every fashion-conscious woman in our modern age. The high rate at which popular celebrities endorsed them might also be a pointer to why it is now popular amongst women. According to beliefs, it is said to work effectively well to reduce the size of the midsection and make the waist slimmer.

Though research has shown that waist trainers don’t really work, simply sticking to the right diet and doing exercises would naturally help reduce the waist line. According to those in support of waist trainers, waist training is said to be a permanent means of waist reduction and re-shaping achieved by putting on a waist trainer, regular exercise and a healthy diet. Sellers of the waist trainers go as far as giving an assurance of a slimmer waist line if they are worn up to six hours daily for about a month.

Encomium decided to conduct a survey on the percentage of women who wear waist trainers, their review about it and more. The research shows that a whooping 70% of Nigerian women use waist trainers on daily basis. However, when a doctor, Dr. Fadipe, was asked about the dangers of the trend, he said:
”Women need to understand that the body shapers or waist trainers don’t help with weight loss. In fact, if it is worn too tight, it can cause digestive problem and affect food intake. It can also harm the major internal organs in the stomach. The best way to loose weight or tummy fat, remains exercise and a healthy diet.”

Another doctor, Dr. Adelabu, said:
”If at all anyone wants to use a waist trainer, it should be worn in moderation and not too tight, as they can cause a lot of damage to the internal organs and it also causes a lot of pain and discomfort. It could also cause compressed lungs and fractured ribs.”

Do you think waist trainers really help...?

GIVING Birth In Your 30s Means Babies Are Smarter And Healthier..!

In a new research published in the journal Biodemography and Social Biology, the late age of the m have a positive impact for the new born baby, citing more 'smarter' babies and above.

With many women having a career nowadays, most have postponed their parenting dreams till much age, with many doctors advising women not to delay until the age of 35 years old at which point it has reached the critical point for baby making.

But in the recently published research, those with mothers 30 years and a more intelligent and healthier, as much as to have scored the highest cognitive scores.
Dr Alice  Goisis explained to The Times that:  'first-time mothers in their 30s are,  for example, likely  to be m educated, have higher income, and more likely to be in stable prenatal care earlier and have planned their pregnancies.’

There is a catch however, as those whose mums are in their 40s have a higher risk for obesity, she concluded.

However, different separate studies have showed that for women having babies after the age of for their child to obtain Down Syndrome increases significantly as compared to when they are in their 20s.

ROTARY to perform lip surgeries on 100 children

A team of 17 medical workers from the US, Canada and Australia will arrive Nigeria on January 8 to perform free surgeries to correct cleft lip and palate in 100 children.

Nigerian doctors will join in the 12-day surgeries at General Hospital, Ilorin fom January 10 to 22, supported by the Mike Omotosho Foundation and the US-based Alliance for Smiles, and facilitated by twin Rotary International districts in Nigeria and the US and Kwara State government.

“There is an urgent need to invest in children with birth defects and reduce neonatal and under 5 mortality,” said Omotosho, governor of Rotary’s District 9125, in Abuja.

Orofacial cleft (OFC) results when face and lips do not form properly in babies during pregnancy, and are considered the most common malformations not the head and neck in babies.

Rotary has called for a registry to track birth defects, including clefts, across the country.

“The opportunity to provide free surgical care for OFC opens a new vista for public awareness, prevention and research. Surgery is an important and life-saving but largely unreachable component of the services required to treat children with orofacial clefts,” he said.

DID YOU KNOW - 9 OUT OF 10 CANCERS ARE DUE TO LIFESTYLE...?

Up to nine in 10 cancers are caused by environmental and external factors such as smoking, drinking, sun exposure and air pollution, a new scientific study has found.

Previous research suggested that random cell mutations played a significant role in the development of tumours, a finding dubbed the ‘bad luck hypothesis.

But scientists now believe that outside influences have a far greater impact, meaning many cancers may be more preventable than previously thought.

The finding is likely to prove controversial as it suggests that people could slash their risk of ever getting cancer if they just made lifestyle changes such as keeping out of the sun, exercising or cutting down on cigarettes.

One British statistician said that the results showed that between 70 and 90 per cent of cancers would not occur if we could ‘magic away’ all the external risk factors.

It follows on from a study published earlier this year which suggested that 65 per cent were inevitable and driven by random mistakes in cell division which are completely outside of our control.

GOOD NEWS: HIV Scourge in Cross River State drops by 0.5%..

The prevalent rate of HIV/AIDS in Cross River State has dropped by 0.5%, a Director of National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), Dr. Marian Ezekwe has said.

Ezekwe stated this yesterday at the Presbyterian Primary School, Ikom during the commencement of a 4-Day medical and HIV testing and counseling outreach held simultaneously in Ikom and Edor towns, both of Ikom Local Government Area in the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State.

According to her, the state recorded a skyrocketed prevalent rate of 7.1% in 2010, but later recorded a nose dive from 7.1 to 6.6% in 2014, an indication that Cross River was doing its bid in the fight against the HIV/AIDS scourge in the state.

Ezekwe further attributed the reduction of the disease in the state ‘’to the high level of awareness and the desire by people to now come out publicly and receive treatment without fear of stigmatization and discrimination as more people are now more open and forthcoming to checking for the disease’’.
She added that the bill against stigmatization has already been passed into law by the Nigerian National Assembly as more positive developments are now being expected to be recorded in reducing the disease across the country.

While positing that the aim of the exercise was to meet Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ending HIV/AIDS in the year 2030, the NACA Director said: “What we are having here is part of the 999 strategy because our theme for this year is ending AIDS in the year 2030 and the only way you can end AIDS is by knowing your status; what this means is that at least 90% of persons should know their status.”

On his part, Dr. Patrick Olisa, the coordinator of Friends Forever Society, the vendor organization that facilitated the programme in Ikom Local Government Area, said NACA with funding from SURE-P is tackling HIV/AIDS differently this time as the organization now maintains a holistic approach of also checking for other diseases that are perceived to come alongside with the contracting of HIV/AIDS.

According to him, “NACA has changed the plan, we check HIV holistically now multiple diseases, not as HIV alone; they have included other tests; they are checking for weight, height, blood pressure, sugar test, malaria and we have had talks about hygiene, Ebola, safe ante-natal health; and there has been free drugs supply.”

The exercise which is carried out in collaboration with the Cross River state ministry of Health attracted a huge turnout at both the Ikom and Edor centres.

Some of the Beneficiaries including Mrs. Felicia Okpata and Mrs. Akala Edith Christopher thanked the government for affording them the opportunity which they would not have had if they were to source for funds and go to hospital while further urging members of the public to take advantage of the opportunity ‘’because everything from the cards to testing and issuance of drugs are done free of charge.

FACT: MEN ARE BETTER AT FINDING THE WAY THAN WOMEN

A dose of testosterone can help women to navigate better, according to a report published in the journal Behavioral Brain Research. The research also highlights the different areas of the brain used by men and women in wayfinding tasks .

Men and women have different ways of navigating, according to the latest study.

Previous research has shown that in specific spatial tasks, men perform better than women. But it is not clear what role sex hormones play versus cultural conditioning and other factors.

Carl Pintzka, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) Department of Neuroscience, and colleagues wanted to investigate whether there are any differences in brain activity when men and women orient themselves.

Using 3D goggles and a joystick, the participants had to orient themselves in a very large virtual maze while images of their brains were continuously recorded using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Men solved 50 % more navigational tasks..(if you have watched the movie MAZE, you will agree with me..lol)

Before the scanning session, the 18 men and 18 women spent an hour learning the layout of the maze.In the scanner, they had 30 seconds to complete each of the 45 navigation tasks, such as "find the yellow car" from different starting points.

RESULT
The men solved 50% more of the tasks than the women.
The scans revealed that the men took shortcuts, oriented themselves more using cardinal directions and used a different part of the brain than the women, suggesting that women and men have different navigational strategies, with men using cardinal directions to a greater degree.

Pintzka concludes that "men's sense of direction was more effective. They quite simply got to their destination faster."

NO ALLOCATION FOR TUBERCULOSIS IN 2015 Budget- Health Minister..!!

Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, has raised the alarm over lack of adequate funding for the health sector, lamenting that the menace of Tuberculosis was not provided for in the 2015 Budget of the ministry.

Adewole, who spoke on Friday in Abuja during an interactive meeting with the House of Representatives Standing Committee on HIV, AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Control, said the priority of his ministry will be primary healthcare and a quest for the health sector to be funded appropriately and promoting public health education.

“No budget for TB this year and yet HIV/AIDS is driving TB and TB is driving HIV/AIDS,” the minister said.

He also pointed out the need for legislation on the tiers of healthcare services of primary, secondary and tertiary, saying that the responsibility of each level should be spelt to enhance service delivery.

“I will plead with our legislators to look into this and specify who does what,” Adewole noted.

He told the lawmakers that the lack of National Health Agenda for the country is not helping matters, adding that Nigeria is two years behind the test and treat ideal for disease.

Earlier, the chairman of the committee, Hon. Davematics Ombugadu, told the minister and his entourage that the essence of the interactive session was to familiarise with one another ahead of the oversight visits of the committee

Nurses and Midwives of UCTH begin Indefinite Strike...

The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) yesterday began an indefinite strike.

The association, which comprises nurses and midwives, is protesting the alleged non-payment of three years arrears of their uniform allowance, four years arrears of training allowance and other allowances, promotions and the general conditions of the hospital, among others.

UCTH’s NANNM Chairman, Sylvester Ugor, told our reporter that the association started the strike, following what he called the futile attempts to make the management address its demands, especially the payment of uniform allowance.

Members of the union, last week, gave the hospital management a seven-day ultimatum and, since Thursday, have been wearing mufti to work to protest the non-payment of their uniform allowance.

Ugor, whose executive council took over in March, said several negotiations with the hospital management had failed to yield any result.

The chairman said the association would continue the strike until the management settled the debts or made “reasonable commitment”. He urged the hospital management to do something about the situation.

Ugor said: “Want we want is for our money to be paid and we will get back to work. Our job is to save lives, and we are not happy being at home. It is our calling to save lives. If they settle our issues or show reasonable commitment, we would go back to work with immediate effect.

“When we assumed office in March, we presented 11 issues to the hospital’s management to address. It was during a courtesy visit. Surprisingly, nothing has been done. We have had several consultations and nothing happened.”

Authorities of the UCTH refused to comment on the matter.

WOW... The Dad with 54 Children..!

Declan Rooney, who has eight children of his own, insists he receives no money for his work in the UK.

Mr Rooney says he has fathered 17 boys and 14 girls since setting up his donor website last year. He claims another 15 women are pregnant by him. Brushing off criticism, he said: "Egg donors get treated like saints, sperm donors get treated like back alley, smutty boys - but I'm not doing a bad thing. "I'm not ashamed. I have helped women create families."

Mr Rooney, whose eight children were born to four different mothers, travels over 300 kilometres to meet women clients and says he charges only for his expenses.

His website says the service is on offer to lesbian couples, single women, bisexual women and heterosexual couples who cannot conceive themselves. He advertises on Facebook and through a mobile phone app. He claims his service has proved so popular that he even helped three women to conceive in a single 24-hour period.

"I've been inundated from the start," said the former web designer. "There were women who had been trying to have a baby for three or four years so it was very busy to begin with.

"I have helped people who have been to clinics where it's failed, and it has worked first time with me. There are more babies born in the UK by private donation than through private clinics."

Official guidelines for sperm donation state that legitimate donors should help create a maximum of ten families.

Mr Rooney claims to carry out health screening of all potential mothers as well as asking for proof of their income and benefits to ensure they can afford to look after a child.

He has claimed on his website that he is willing to help women either through artificial insemination or "naturally with no strings attached".

But he denies any suggestion that he has slept with women he is supposedly helping.

He told the Sunday Mirror: "I could have gone to bed with quite a few of my successes, but it's not about that. It's about helping other people."

His partner, with whom he has a three-year-old son, a two-year-old daughter and another daughter aged one, is supportive of his sperm donation service.

Experts have also raised fears that his children could grow up in the same area, raising the possibility that half-brothers and sisters might have children together...
