Doctors at Dr Malizo Mpehle Memorial
Hospital in Tsolo, South Africa, delivered a
baby with an eye and a penis on the forehead, the provincial health department said.

The baby girl, who was born to a 16-year-old girl from Qumbu, did not survive.

Eastern Cape department of health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the baby was born with one eye on her forehead, and no eyes where her eyes should have been.

She had a penis on the forehead even though she is a girl; and exposed small and large intestines.

"She was born with a small penis on the

Kupelo said.

"She was born with no nose and where there are supposed to be eyes there was nothing, just skin covered over the area."

FG lifts ban on Residency Training Programme for Medical Doctors..!!

According to Channels TV, The Federal Government has also reinstated all resident doctors that were disengaged as a result of the suspension with effect from the same date.

Accordingly, all Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of the training centres are directed to issue letters of reinstatement to the resident doctors to enable them resume work immediately.

The Federal Government urges the resident doctors to see the magnanimity of government in reinstating them as a goodwill gesture to engender greater commitment and dedication to their duties.

The Federal Government had earlier decided that Residency Training Programme in Federal Government hospitals be suspended, pending the conclusion of the ongoing appraisal of the challenges in the health sector.

The decision was made while the strike
embarked on the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, which started on July 1, was still ongoing, and the Federal Government noted that the strike by members of the NMA had resulted in untold hardship on innocent members of the society who were in need of medical care.

The strike was, however, suspended on Sunday, August 24 (five days ago), after the Federal Government promised to meet their demands.

New Ebola numbers show disease has killed half of those it has infected...!!!

The latest numbers show that the Ebola virus has killed 1,552 out of 3,069 known patients, the World Health Organization said Thursday.

The deadly disease "continues to accelerate," the organization said. It could eventually hit 20,000 cases — more than six times what it is now. Plus, the actual number of affected individuals could be two to four times higher than what's currently being recorded.

"More than 40% of the total number of cases have occurred within the past 21 days. However, most cases are
concentrated in only a few localities," the health agency said in a statement.

The new numbers encompass Guinea,
Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

A new outbreak in Congo, thought to be unrelated to the current outbreak in the aforementioned countries, was not
included in the statistics.

On Wednesday, the leader of the African Development Bank said that Ebola is causing major economic damage across West Africa.

"Revenues are down, foreign exchange levels are down, markets are not functioning, airlines are not coming in, projects are being cancelled, business people have left — that is very, very damaging,".

There are also talks that the current Ebola outbreak may affect about 20,000 persons before it can finally be fully controlled..

Nigerian Celebrities Mourn Late Doctor Adadevoh... SHE IS A HERO...!!

Some days ago, Dr. Adadevoh's colleagues were appealing for assistance so as to save
her life, but I guess it was already too late.
What a painful way to die...!!!

Nigerian celebrities have continued to react to the death of Dr. Ameyo Adadevoh, the consultant physician, who died on Tuesday after contracting the Ebola Virus from the late Patrick Sawyer.

Different celebrities have written their own tributes on the doctor who saved the country from the Ebola epidemic by refusing to cave in to the pressure by the Liberian Embassy to allow Patrick Sawyer leave the hospital.

While some say Nigeria should sanction the United States, others stated that the Federal government should give the late doctor a posthumous national award.

Controversial Actress, Halima Abubaka posted on Instagram thus, "Rip brave woman. Hmmm and the doctor slept.. Rip ma#EbolaAwareness# victim#sad"

Singer Lynxx also wrote "I'm beyond sad…. Speechless to say the least… This isn't someone I heard about through the news but a Friends Mum I met almost 20 years ago. I cant even fathom how he / his family feels! But God would be your strength through this trying time! Your death would not be in vain for you stood up to fight for the world, not just your country! May The Good Lord rest your gentle soul in Jesus name! Amen!"

Actress Rita Dominic posted on Instagram "A Hero or Heroine refers to characters who, in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness display courage and the will for self-sacrifice.. That is, heroism-for some greater good of all humanity.. Rest In Peace, Dr AMEYO ADADEVOH.."

Singer, Weird MC tweeted "Dr Adadevoh Thank you ….Fly like an Eagle….Thanks ever so much."

Actress Stella Damasus wrote "Kind and beautiful Dr Ameyo Adadevoh stood her ground to protect Nigeria. She refused to allow Mr. sawyer leave first consultants hospital even when the Liberian Ambassador pressured her to release him. Imagine what would have happened if she had let him go. Ebola would have been more widespread than what we are dealing with now. She died this evening and I strongly believe she deserves a national posthumous award.

The Cross River state government should honour this woman because Dr. sawyer was supposed to attend a seminar in Calabar.
If she had not stopped him from going there, what do you think would have happened to the people of Cross River?

EBOLA- She was Determined to save Patrick Sawyer's Life, but she got infected...!!!

Dr, Mrs Stella Adadevoh is a consultant Physician and Endocrinologist at First Consultant Hospital in Lagos where late Liberian Patrick Sawyer was diagnosed with the deadly Ebola disease. She was one of those who diagnosed and was treating Sawyer at First Consultant. Unfortunately she was infected by Sawyer.

Her Fellow Consultants put her pic and case out at a press conference on Thursday, appealing to the U.S Government to urgently send whatever treatment they have for the Ebola virus to Nigeria to save her life and that of other Nigerians at risk of the disease.

According to a Fellow Consultant Mr Okubadejo:

"She treated Sawyer because she was patriotic only for her to be infected with the virus. I am appealing to the U.S. government to send whatever medication they have to Nigeria fast to save Adadevoh. She does not deserve to die. So, this is the reason for this appeal,"

Dr. Adadevoh was one of those who refused to let Sawyer leave the hospital when he attempted to leave while being treated. She probably saved many lives.

DOCTORS ARE SELFLESS. They deserve to be protected and cared for. In cases like this, they are the ones who suffer First-hand..

Doctors Protest in Abuja saying- 'Sacking Doctors Not The Answer'..!!

What else was expected from our Doctors following the suspension of all resident programs in Nigeria?

Doctors yesterday in Abuja carried placards to protest their 'sack' by the federal government and the suspension of their residency programmes in federal hospitals, demanding for immediate withdrawal of the circular terminating their appointments.

On thursday, it became news that President Goodluck Jonathan had directed the federal ministry of Health to suspend all residency training programmes for doctors, who have been on an indefinite strike since July 1st to press home their demands.

Resident doctors work in teaching hospitals, mostly owned by the federal government. They work as well as learn to become consultants.

Numbering over 50, many of the doctors who wore white overalls, gathered in front of their headquarters in Benghazi Street, Wuse, blocking the road, carrying placards with inscriptions like, "Mr President, Reverse Your Decision Now or Else"; "Mr President, Bring Back Our Doctors, Sacking Doctors Not The Answer".

Addressing the protesters and journalists, the national president of National Association of Resident Doctors, Dr Jubril Abdullahi, condemned government's move and wondered whether it was to resolve the crisis or escalate it.

But the federal government has reacted, describing the protest as hypocritical.

Permanent secretary, federal ministry of Health, Dr Linus Awute, said this yesterday during an interview with journalists. According to him, some of the doctors who claimed to be on strike were still in the field working. He blamed the doctors for the decision by the federal government to suspend residency training for the medical practitioners, including the directive to the managements of public hospitals to find replacements for them.

The president of the NMA, Dr Kayode Obembe who was given a tumultuous applause by his members, following his resignation, last week, described the federal government's action as an assault to the profession.

He charged the doctors not to collect any sack letter, saying that the current government's stance would further worsen the situation.

He said the statutes that established the residency training programme have not been followed and that no individual, no matter how highly placed can wilfully sack doctors without recourse to the statutes.

Doctors deserve a lot of respect in this country. 'Sacking Doctors' is a shame with regards to the Government's response to the on-going strike. It is by no means a solution to the problem.

'Ebola Drug- Nanosilver' is an Antibacterial Agent warns US FDA..!!

Just Yesterday, we heard that an experimental drug called 'Nanosilver' developed by a Nigerian in diaspora for the treatment of Ebola has arrived the country.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on Thursday it has become aware of products being sold online that fraudulently claim to prevent or treat Ebola.

The FDA's warning comes on the heels of comments by Nigeria's top health official, Onyebuchi Chukwu, who reportedly said earlier Thursday that eight Ebola patients in Lagos, the country's capital, will receive an experimental treatment called nano-silver.

Silver has been used as an ANTIBACTERIAL for centuries.

Tiny silver particles known as nano-silver have controversially been incorporated into a variety of consumer products such as socks and bedding to help block odors caused by bacteria and mold.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency considers nano-silver a pesticide. Manufacturers of products that contain it must register them with the agency.

The agency said it had received consumer complaints about the Ebola claims.

"Individuals promoting these unapproved and fraudulent products must take immediate action to correct or remove these claims or face potential FDA action," the agency said.

The Ebola outbreak ravaging West Africa has claimed 1,069 lives so far. Most have been in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Nigeria has confirmed 10 cases of the disease and four deaths.

Africa’s last polar bear dies of a broken heart after losing mate..!!

Wang, believed to be the only polar bear left in Africa, died on Wednesday – around six months after the death of GeeBee, his partner of 27 years.

The official statement from the zoo said Wang was put down due to complications from 'liver and heart failure'.

But he had been noticeably in mourning since the death of GeeBee from a heart attack in January.

He appeared listless, shunned food and did not want to go swimming – a pastime he enjoyed with GeeBee.

Wang came to Johannesburg as a cub in 1986, as part of a conservation exchange programme with a zoo in Japan.

He was introduced to GeeBee and the pair grew up together at the zoo. They did not ' breed because polar bear reproduction relies on cold weather.

Indeed, it was South Africa's incompatible climate with the ageing and ill polar bear that led to the zoo's decision to put Wang down. The zoo does not intend to replace the bears.

Despite Wang's sad demise, it has to be said that the old boy had a pretty good innings. Polar bears in the wild don't usually live past 20.

Man dies at Lagos airport. Dead passenger not Ebola case —FAAN

There was pandemonium at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Monday, when a middle -aged man slumped and died, while queuing up to get the yellow card.

The incident happened when the new Minister of Aviation, Mr Osita Chidoka, was on tour of the Lagos Airport for the first time.

The minister and his entourage, including the journalists, who accompanied him, stumbled on the corpse.

While  details leading to the death are sketchy, officials of the port health services at the airport said the passenger died of exhaustion.

As of the time of filing this report, the corpse of the passenger was  still on a mat in  front of the port health office and covered with a pink cloth.

The tour had to be diverted to another area because of panic obviously as a result of the hype the outbreak of Ebola virus had created.

The aviation minister is expected to brief the media today, (Tuesday) of his plans for the sector.

Meanwhile, The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has confirmed the death of the middle-aged man who, until his death, was a Nigerian  residing in Accra, Ghana.

The passenger,  Mr Akunne Osei, who arrived in Lagos for business transactions aboard an Arik Air flight on  August 8, died at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, on his way back to Accra on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the General Manager, Corporate Communications, FAAN, Yakubu Dati, "the passenger, Mr Osei, took ill on Saturday, August 9 and started stooling. When the situation got worse, he called his doctor in Accra, who instructed him to return to Ghana immediately for further treatment.

"During boarding formalities for his return trip to Accra, at the international terminal of MMA, Mr Osei, who had obviously become weak at this time, was subjected to Ebola virus test by port health officials, the result of which was negative.

"No further attention was paid to him after his Ebola virus result read negative, but the passenger later slumped and died around the port health office.

"This release is necessary to forestall the possible dissemination of unfounded and misleading media reports on the unfortunate incident.

New Ebola Vaccine to undergo Clinical trials next month..!!

Officials from the World Health Organisation WHO said that the first round of clinical trials of a potential Ebola vaccine made by GlaxoSmithKline may begin next month and the vaccine could possibly be available by 2015, MSN News reported on Sunday.

According to NBC News, a "level 1 activation" response has typically been reserved for only the most dire and pressing emergencies, such as the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 or the bird flu outbreak in 2009. The CDC has already committed 50 more staff people to fly to the area of the outbreak over the next month, and more could follow.

Meanwhile, medical ethicists will meet next week to discuss who should have access to the limited supplies of an experimental medicine for the deadly Ebola virus, the WHO said.

The drug was given to and benefited Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, two American aid workers who contracted the disease in West Africa. It was the first time the drug was tried on people, NBC News reported.

The maker of the drug has said it can't produce large amounts of the experimental medicine, which means only a limited number of patients will be able to receive it. There is no certified vaccine or cure for Ebola.

"We are in an unusual situation in this outbreak," WHO official Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny said in a statement, NBC reported. "We need to ask the medical ethicists to give us guidance on what the responsible thing to do is."

Health Specialists Say Ebola Virus Is Not A Death Sentence..!!

According to Dr Idris, the issues revolving around the outbreak of the virus in Lagos and how it is being managed to avoid further spread.

He stated that the mortality rate for the disease has been between 40% – 90% as many people have survived it.

"If you have Ebola or you suspect people have contracted it, the people need to come out because that way you don't infect other people and you're quickly brought under treatment. Once its properly treated, chances are that they will survive", he said.

Dr Idris stated that the Lagos Government has succeed in providing information to citizens on how the disease can be transferred and emergency numbers to contact if there were any suspected cases.

He affirmed that a total of 10 people have been confirmed to have the virus, with two of them reportedly dead – Patrick Sawyer and the nurse.

Explaining that a body temperature which is above 38.5 degrees is usually one of the symptoms for detecting victims who have the virus, he disclosed that the Government was monitoring people that came in contact with the late Liberian-American, Patrick Sawyer, to prevent more spread.

Also speaking on the Ebola virus outbreak,
Secretary, FCT Health and Human Services, Dr Demola Onakomaiya, noted that the people mostly at risk of contacting the virus were the families of the victims and the health care providers. He advised that there should be an index suspicion rate, which is to take basic preventive measures.

He added that the Federal Government has
collaborated with other organisations to prevent the spread of the virus, adding that two cardinal steps to manage the virus was to have strong personal hygiene and massive sensitization.

"Sensitization entails two ways, internal and external; the external party are the public while internal are the staffs so they know what is expected of them", he said.

Dr Onakomaiya confirmed that asides the
sensitization currently going on, there was a device at the airport which would pick up high fever in suspected victims to curb the wide spread of the virus.

The Chairman Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners, Dr Adeyeye Arigbabuwo, who was also part of the conversation, cautioned that due to the similarity between the Ebola virus disease and other common ailment like malaria, it would be difficult for the general public to recognize a person who already has the virus.

He, nevertheless, explained that "fever on a high temperature side accompanied by severe weakness with muscle pains which may be accompanied by Diarrhea with vomiting is Ebola."

Dr Arigbabuwo described the ailment to be
contagious when the patient starts tricking down with the illness, urging citizens to make use of the communication channels to seek help.

Regarding the ZMAPP, which is an experimental serum mixture for immunological protection against the Ebola virus, Arigbabuwo noted that the drug was yet to be tested on human beings but only on animals, and the process, which is called control trial, needs to be followed, where the drug undergoes full test and is used on a person before its distributed.

EBOLA- WHAT IS THE BASIS FOR BATHING SALT AND WATER...?

Bathing Salt and Water has become a trend in Nigeria following rumours of its presumed benefits in preventing/curing Ebola Virus Infection...

It's no longer news that some West African Countries have been the major sufferers of this outbreak. In Nigeria, the Ebola Virus outbreak that was first identified in Lagos has caused a lot trendy topics, the most recent being, 'Bathing with Water and Salt'.

This idea started in the early hours of Friday, and has been a subject of discussion all over the country. However, the mechanism behind how this therapy works remains far-fetched.

Ideas have been provided.. Some persons say, 'it could be a cure' and Others 'a Placebo'..

A PLACEBO is a Medicine that is ineffective but may help to relieve a condition because the patient has faith in its powers. NEW DRUGS are tested against PLACEBO in clinical trials, the drug's effect is compared with the placebo response, which occurs even in the absence of a pharmacologically active substance in the Placebo...

The issue still remains bathing with salt and water has no known basis for its alleged use in curing Ebola infection.

As for us @Healthinfotainmentng we are saying to all Nigerians, USING SALT and WATER to bath has no medical basis.

But if you have any ideas, do well to leave your comments below.

Benin Republic reports 2 possible cases of Ebola, one a Nigerian..!

Benin Republic has placed two patients, one of them a Nigerian, with Ebola-like symptoms in isolation and was waiting for test results to establish if the pair were infected with the deadly tropical disease.

Deputy chief of staff at the health ministry, Moufalilou Aboubakar, told journalists that the two patients were being treated as suspected cases of Ebola and that blood samples had been sent to foreign labs for conclusive results.

"We cannot say today that the virus is in Benin," Aboubakar told reporters. "The patients are in isolation and under observation pending the results of the ongoing tests."

If the patients are confirmed to have Ebola, Benin would become the fifth country in the region to be hit by the outbreak.

One patient was identified as a Nigerian man being treated at a hospital in the capital Porto-Novo.

The other is at hospital in the economic capital Cotonou.

Tiny Benin shares a border with Nigeria, which has recorded seven Ebola cases including two deaths in its largest city Lagos.

Cotonou is just a few hours drive from Lagos and there is significant traffic between the two cities each day, especially among traders.

The deadliest ever outbreak of Ebola is spreading quickly across west Africa.

Nearly 1,000 people have died from the virus since the start of the year, mostly in Liberia and Sierra Leone — which have both imposed emergency measures to contain the spread — and Guinea, where the outbreak began.
