Egyptian military says it has secretly developed the cure for HIV and hepatitis C..!!

In His words, "As my colleagues Kareem Fahim and Mayy El Sheikh reported, the Egyptian military made the unlikely announcement last week that after 22 years of secret research it had found a cure to not just one global public health scourge, but two: hepatitis C and H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

The claim was made by an army doctor, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Abdul Atti, at a news conference attended by the country's military-appointed interim president, Adly Mansour, as well as the defence minister, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a popular figure who led the country's July 2013 removal of the Islamist president. General Sisi is widely seen as a leading presidential contender.

General Abdul Atti said that he discovered the cures for HIV and hepatitis C after 22 years of research he conducted with the assistance of Egyptian military intelligence and that his methods were able to cure 100 percent of AIDS cases and more than 95 percent of hepatitis C cases.

"You will never find another patient suffering from the Hepatitis C virus after today, God willing," said General Abdul Atti, according to subtitled video of the announcement that was uploaded on Tuesday to a YouTube account focused on Egyptian politics and current events. It has been viewed more than 30,000 times in two days.

General Abdul Atti's claims to have found a cure coincided with a separate announcement that the military helped develop a device that can detect hepatitis C infection from across a room, without a blood test. According to video posted to YouTube of a segment about the device was shown on Egyptian state television, the machine resembled a staple gun with a radio antenna attached.

The announcement came in the midst of a months-long crackdown on government critics, which began with followers of the deposed president Mohamed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood movement but soon spread to non-Islamists critical of the military and security forces.

Last month, prosecutors that announced they were investigating a popular television puppet for its ties to terrorism, and more than one animal in recent years has been accused of links to Israeli intelligence.

A cure for hepatitis C would be a cause for celebration in Egypt, which reportedly has the world's highest prevalence of the virus. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 20 percent of Egyptian blood donors test positive for hepatitis C. The country's H.I.V. infection rate is less than 1 percent, according to the Joint United Nations Program on H.I.V. and AIDS.

The global scientific community has unsuccessfully sought a cure for both diseases for decades, and independent experts were deeply skeptical that the Egyptian military — working in secret, and without having published any findings in a peer-reviewed scientific journal — could have simultaneously unlocked the cure to two deadly epidemics.

That skepticism was shared by Essam Heggy, a science adviser to President Mansour, who called the military's claims "unrealistic," "lacking clear scientific basis" and "an insult to Egypt" in an interview with an Egyptian newspaper, al-Watan, that was translated into English by the website Mada Masr. Mr. Heggy also sought to distance President Mansour and General Sisi, the military chief, from the announcement, saying: "They were both surprised with what was said without them being consulted. Their presence at the conference doesn't mean their approval of it."

Beware! Stethoscopes could be more contaminated than hands...

What is more contaminated in hospitals, doctors' hands or his stethoscope? Research indicates towards the latter(Oh Yes).

Although healthcare workers' hands are the main source of bacterial transmission in hospitals, physicians' stethoscopes appear to play a role.

"Stethoscopes are used repeatedly and come directly into contact with patients' skin. These may harbour several thousands of bacteria. We consider them as potentially significant vectors of transmission," said Didier Pittet, director of infection control programme and World Health Organisation (WHO) centre on patient safety at Geneva University Hospitals (HUG).

The stethoscope should be regarded as an extension of the physician's hands and be disinfected after every patient contact, he noted.

To explore this, investigators at Geneva University Hospitals assessed the level of bacterial contamination on physicians' hands and stethoscopes following a single physical examination.

In this study, 71 patients were examined by one of three physicians using sterile gloves and a sterile stethoscope.

After they completed the examination, two parts of the stethoscope (the tube and diaphragm) and four regions of the physician's hands (back, fingertips, and thenar and hypothenar eminences) were measured for bacteria present.

The stethoscope's diaphragm was more contaminated than all regions of the physician's hand except the fingertips.

Further, the tube of the stethoscope was more heavily contaminated than the back of the physician's hand.

This work is the first to compare directly the level of contamination of physicians' hands and stethoscopes.

Physicians must be aware of the need to disinfect their stethoscope after each use, suggested the study that appeared in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Do you think stethoscopes should be disinfected after every patient contact... Please leave your comments below...

Imo Launches Village Health Workers Scheme...!

The Imo Government on Thursday launched a village health workers scheme to fast track health care delivery at the grassroots.

The Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Eze Madumere, launched the scheme in Owerri with a charge to the workers to be diligent in their duties as grassroots health care providers.

Represented by Dr Edward Ihejirika, the Commissioner for Health, Madumere handed over the health kits to 40 village health workers.

Madumere said that the scheme was initiated to complement the "health at your doorstep" programme of the state government.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Millennium Development Goals, Mrs Mma Nzeribe, said the scheme would enhance access to health care services.

Nzeribe said the scheme would make the required impact in improving community health outcomes by increasing the utilisation of health care facilities provided by the state government.

She enjoined the health workers to disseminate information about the health services available at the established primary health centres in their communities.

The governor's aide also charged them to educate the people in local communities on the benefits of improving basic household practices, such as hygiene and promotion of healthy lifestyles for the whole family.

"Your effectiveness in carrying out your duty will fast track the reduction in child mortality and improve maternal health, especially in our rural communities where the overall health care delivery system is weak and under utilised,'' she said.

Nzeribe, who handed over the kits to health workers from Isu, Ikeduru, Obowo and Njaba Local Government Areas, she advised them to make use of the kits and logbooks for the day to day activities.

She noted that the records would help in the assessment of the progress recorded in the health- related goals of the MDG's.

"Today we commission you with your kits to be the strong link between the primary health centres and your community.

"I want to encourage you to be dedicated to service and diligently carry out your duties,'' she said. (NAN)

Ekiti empowers 108 people living with HIV/AIDS...

Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, has distributed empowerment materials worth over N5million to 108 People Living with HIV/AIDs in the state.

The governor's wife, who is also the Chairman, Ekiti State AIDs Control Agency, said the gesture underscored the commitment of the state government in giving a new lease of life to the beneficiaries.

The exercise, which was the third since the Governor Kayode Fayemi-led administration came on board, took place at the Office of the Wife of the Governor, on Wednesday.

The beneficiaries, under the aegis of the Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria, were given items such as deep freezers, computer sets, video cameras, sewing machines, grinding machines, photocopy machines and clothing.

The wife of the governor pledged the continued support of the state government for the NEPWHAN members in ensuring that they live a meaningful life, adding that a lot more was being done to reduce the HIV/AIDS prevalence to the barest in the state.

She said, "When I became the chairman of SACA, I insisted that in everything that we do around HIV/AIDS in Ekiti State, we should ensure that we empower people who are living with HIV/AIDS and we should be able to tell the people that being HIV positive is not the end of the world.

"We need to set an example and demonstrate practically what it means to be living with HIV/AIDS and still have hope. Testing positive is not the end of the world."

She appealed to those who had yet to know their HIV status to submit themselves for testing and counselling.

She said the state government provided free medical care for the PLWH to mitigate the challenges they are being confronted with.

The Project Manager of SACA, Dr. Charles Doherty, said the distribution of empowerment materials to NEPWHAN members was part of government's efforts at reducing poverty and death in the society.

"The beauty of this exercise is that one of the NEPWHAN members supplied all the items being distributed today," he said.

Indian Doctor Arrested For Illegal Operation in Abuja...!!!

According to Daily times Newspaper, An Indian neurosurgeon, Dr. Raju Basina, 53, has been arrested by officials of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for operating without a practice licence.

Basina was arrested at the Asokoro District Hospital by the Police from Apo Resettlement Division, Abuja, following a fresh round of onslaught by the MDCN against quackery.

He was said to have been conducting neurosurgical operations at the hospital for more than a year without licence from the medical council, the regulating agency for doctors and dentists in the country.

Basina was said to be performing a craniotomy (brain surgery) in an operating theatre when police and MDCN's inspectorate officials led by Dr. Henry Okwuokenye arrived at the hospital for his arrest.

The team was also accompanied by President of the Guild of Medical Directors, Dr. Tony Phillips.

The Chief Medical Director of Asokoro Hospital, Dr. Ahmadu Abubakar, had to prevail on officials of MDCN to wait for him to conclude his surgery before thy could pick him up(thank God).

Okwuokenye, who is Head (Inspectorate Unit) of MDCN, told journalists that investigations had revealed that Basina had already been working as a doctor at Asokoro Hospital for many months before eventually applying for a licence in August last year.

He said, "The MDCN is yet to process Basina's application while response from our counterpart in India's medical regulating agency is pending. But Basina has continued to work on contract, insisting that he had applied."

According to him, mere application did not constitute the temporary licence meant for doctors who are trained outside Nigeria, adding that Basina should have waited for a response before practising.

"We wrote a letter to India to tell us about the status and licence of Basina but they have yet to get back to us. Although he claimed to have applied, mere application is not a licence to practice. When we asked him if a doctor could practise in India without licence, he said No. Why then is he practising in Nigeria? Time has come for us to sanitise the system, Nigeria is not a banana Republic where anything can happen," Okwuokenye stated.

(SAD)Mother describes baby's final hours...!!

A devastated mother wept as she described the moment her premature baby died hours after being removed from a ventilator.

He was resuscitated after birth and put on a ventilator on the hospital's neonatal ward, where doctors believed he was "doing well".

Rohan was then moved to St Michael's Hospital in Bristol - in the same trust as Bristol Children's Hospital - to be assessed for an operation to close a heart duct which was open.

But just 24 hours after arriving, the decision was made to remove Rohan from the ventilator and his condition deteriorated rapidly.

He was 36 days old when he died.

Mother Bronwyn told an inquest a doctor later apologised to her and husband Alex after their son was removed from the machine and given breathing mask treatment Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) instead.

Practising vet Mrs Rhodes said: "During the time Vel (Dr Velmurugan Ramalingam) was working on Rohan he apologised repeatedly.

"He said: 'Don't worry, we will take care of him'.

"I was repeatedly crying and shaking my head: 'But you haven't. You haven't taken care of my baby. He came here in good health for a procedure'.

"Vel kept saying he was so sorry."

She added: "There were other babies being ignored while..." before being stopped from continuing by the coroner.

Flax Bourton Coroner's Court heard Mrs Rhodes, of Narbeth, Pembrokeshire, was admitted to Withybush Hospital in west Wales on August 26, 2012.

She was just 25 weeks pregnant when Rohan was born in Singleton Hospital's Special Care Baby Unit the following day.

Dr Geraint Morris, a consultant paediatrician on the unit, described Rohan as being "extremely premature" and requiring ventilation.

Mrs Rhodes said: "The medical team tried to wean him off the ventilator from day one.

"He was a very healthy baby considering. He digested his food and consistently put on weight and grew. He was a very active baby."

The consultants believed it was impossible to wean Rohan off the ventilator any further, Mrs Rhodes said.

A medical team from Singleton transferred Rohan to St Michael's Hospital, where he was to be assessed for surgery on his open heart duct.

Jonathan Opens N3.233 Billion Turkish Hospital...!!!

President Goodluck Jonathan On Thursday commissioned a $20 million Nizamaye Hospital, considered a milestone in bilateral relations between Nigeria and Turkey.

The 80-bed world-class facility cited in an industrial layout in Abuja is the first time Turkey, under the Nigeria-Turkish expatriate business group, ventures into healthcare.

Turkey ambassador to Nigeria Mustafa Pulat said that"This hospital is another token of our interest and determination to come to Nigeria--in the best way we can, of course," said Mustafa Pulat, Turkey's ambassador to Nigeria.

"It is our own investment in the human capital of Nigeria," Pulat added in an interview with Daily Trust.

"The outcome will be long term. We have to be patient. The outcomes will be strong and very beneficial for Nigeria and Turkey."

Both countries have maintained bilateral relations in business terms since the Nigerian-Turkish group began its gradual creep in 1998 into Nigerian education system.

From primary and international colleges, Nigerian-Turkish group now runs 16 schools, including Nile University it started four years ago.

The Medical director, Dr Mustafa Ahsen, gave an estimate of $20 million (N3.233 billion) to set up, and its manpower stands at around 148, Nigerian and Turkish combined.

Nizamiye, occupying four floors on prime property, started work last year, months before its official opening, offering services in internal medicine, radiology, ear-nose-and-throat, paediatrics, orthopaedics and gynaecology.

It doesn't have a psychiatry unit, but Dr Ahsen said it planned to open units in angiography and emergency cardiology and gradually expand to a teaching hospital to serve the group's Nile University.

'WEIRD' 25-year-old woman ‘gives birth’ to STONE after 4-YEAR ‘pregnancy’

A young woman in Adamawa is said to have become the cynosure of all eyes after she 'gave birth' to a stone.

25-year-old Amina Bello is said to have 'taken delivery' of the "sizable" stone after being "pregnant" for a whopping four years.

Madam Bello is said to have disclosed this at the launching ceremony of a series of free treatments for victims of Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF).

Bello, who was also a VVF patient, told the gathering that after four years pregnancy, she was delivered of a sizable stone last year.

"I was carrying a pregnancy for four years, which I bitterly suffered because of the heavy weight of what was contained in the stomach.

"It was last year around June, I started feeling labour and I was in that condition for three days and finally I was delivered of a stone,'' Bello said. She said it was after the delivery she discovered that she had VVF.

Dr Sunday Lengmang, Director VVF Centre, Jos, confirmed that giving birth to a stone or any object was possible. Lengmang was in Yola to attend to the VVF patients for one week.

"Stones and other solid objects can form in a human body in different cases.

"Stones can form in a gall bladder, urinary bladder and other several parts of urinary tracks,'' he said.

The medical expert said why VVF patients were prone to giving birth to stones or any solid object was because they drank less water to reduce urine leakage. He said as a result of taking less water, their urine become concentrated.

"Inside urine, there is salt, sodium and chlorine, and when the urine becomes concentrated, the salt is crystallised and finally forms itself and latter ends up as a stone,'' he said.

Lengmang confirmed that three VVF patients had stones in their placentas and they would go under surgery. He said the size of the stones uncovered from the three women was six by seven and three by four centimetres. Lengmang advised VVF patients to drink more water instead of taking less to prevent them from risk of having stones.

44-Year-Old Fetus Found Inside Elderly Brazilian Woman...!!!

Doctors were left shocked and bewildered when they discovered a "stone baby" inside the womb of an 84-year-old Brazilian woman. The "stone baby" is an actual fetus that was a result of a botched pregnancy she had 44 years ago.

The elderly woman was admitted to a hospital in the central state of Tocantins when she complained of dizziness and severe stomach pain. After getting a routine X-ray, doctors saw the figure of a fetus that was estimated to be 20 to 28 weeks old. The woman was immediately transferred to Porto Nacional Hospital to undergo more tests.

According to the doctors, the woman claimed to have fallen pregnant more than 40 years ago. She experienced unbearable pain during the pregnancy and visited a witch doctor in order to eliminate her discomfort. The healer then gave her medication, which provided her instant relief. Soon after, her belly stopped growing and the movement inside also ceased. Attending gynecologist Gesneria Saraiva Kratka says that the woman believed the baby had already been aborted.

Kratka also said that the fetus managed to stay in the woman's abdomen for more than 40 years because it developed a calcified exterior over time, protecting the woman from suffering complications brought about by dead tissue. "Stone babies" – otherwise called lithopedions – result from dead fetuses that are unable to be reabsorbed by the mother's body due to its size. Other cases of documented lithopedions include a 92-year-old Chinese woman with a 60-year-old fetus inside her body and a Colombian woman with a 40-year-old fetus in her womb.

Despite Kratka's advice to undergo surgery, the Brazilian woman was said to have no plans of getting rid of her "stone baby" any time soon. She is due to undergo further tests and scans to get more information about the fetus, after which the doctors will consult with the woman's family members regarding the operation.

St. Valentine’s Day: NACA Sounds Sex Warning....!!!!

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has reminded Nigerians on the need to desist from activities capable of putting them and their loved ones at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases on Valentine Day.

Valentine Day has over the years been a day when love is demonstrated among individuals through gestures of affection such as flowers, perfumes, cloths among other gift items.

The agency noted that the high rate of indiscriminate sexual activities perpetrated on Valentine Day has led to uninformed decision making among adolescents.

In a press statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday in Abuja, the chief communications officer, NACA, Mrs Toyin Aderibigbe said in its efforts to actualise a generation free from HIV/AIDS, the agency is advising that at this season of love, Nigerians should be principled and abstain from sex or indulge only in protected sex.

While reminding Nigerians of the ABC approach to HIV/AIDS prevention, Aderibigbe explained that this concept in its basic form suggests prevention, education, and health promotion which provide simple steps in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS.

TV doctor House helps save patient in real life...

We're all used to seeing fictional doctor Gregory House save patients on his TV show – but it turns out his problem-solving skills may have also helped a person in real life.

A German doctor utilised House's expertise to diagnose one of his patients who had shown up with several symptoms, including fever, blindness, and a failing heart.

The man was in luck as Dr Juergen Schaefer had recently viewed an episode of House, where Hugh Laurie's character had solved a similar medical enigma.

'After five minutes, I knew what was wrong,' he said.

It transpired that, just like the patient on TV, the sick man was suffering from cobalt poisoning due to a problem with his hip replacement.

The man's condition improved after Dr Schaefer, who works at the Centre for Undiagnosed Diseases near Frankfurt, sent him to get a new hip...

NIGERIAN WOMAN GIVES BIRTH ABOARD A TRICYCLE...

A woman gave birth to a baby boy at 1p.m. in Aba, Abia State, on Wednesday aboard a tricycle(a.k.a. KEKE) conveying her to the hospital.

A witness, Chika Onyedikachi, said the woman had gone into labour at home and thereafter boarded a tricycle to convey her to the hospital.

Ms. Onyedikachi, a nurse, said that "the woman's water broke on the way to the hospital".

She said that when the vehicle got to Tonimas Junction, Aba, the baby's head began to emerge because the trip to the hospital was halted.

Ms. Onyedikachi said that she assisted the woman in the delivery of the baby because she happened to be passing by where the incident took place.

Another witness, Marizu John, said that it was an exciting afternoon for everyone as a similar occurrence took place at the same spot in 2013.

Mr. John said, "last year a mad woman gave birth to a set of twins in this very place, so I have the feeling that this place is special."

Violet Onwutuebe, also a witness, said this was the first time she had witnessed such an incident. She wished both mother and child good health.

The tricycle operator proved abortive as he ran away when the baby's head started emerging.

Meanwhile, Ms. Onyedikachi said that both mother and child had been taken home and were in good condition.

WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO SIAMESE TWINS...!!!

Siamese twins are defined by medical experts as a pair of identical twins born with their bodies joined at some point, a result of the incomplete division of the ovum the twins developed from.

Such twins are rare. Occurrence is estimated to range from 1 in 50 000 births to 1 in 200 000 births.

"I am leaving everything in God's hands," said a shocked Ms Susan Shonhiwa (27), who delivered at Chegutu District Hospital on Wednesday last week but has since been transferred to Harare Central Hospital for further medical examinations.

The babies were born in the afternoon with one body that has two hearts, four lungs, two ribs, two backbones, two arms, two legs and a male sexual organ.

When The Sunday Mail visited Harare Central Hospital, the mother was still recovering from the caesarian surgical operation.

"Although I have accepted what happened, my heart and mind are still overburdened," she said.

"I don't know what to think and how things are going end so I am just waiting for the full report from medical specialists. I have surrendered everything to God."

She said nurses were afraid of informing her about the babies' condition.

"When the nurses told me about the condition, they referred me here (Harare General Hospital).

Her husband, Mr Mabvuto Bero, has been very supportive but concedes that he, too, is perplexed.

"In my whole life I have never witnessed something like this and it is still hard for me to face the reality even after the counselling we received from doctors," Mr Bero said emotionally.

"I am finding it difficult even to name the baby because I am not sure whether the baby is single or they are twins . . . I don't know what is going to happen next.

"The doctors have so far established that the heads, hearts and lungs function separately while the organs join from the waist to the bottom.

"They told me that there is need for further assessment as they have not yet figured how the intestines are functioning." Currently, the babies are in an incubator in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit where several medical assessments are being done.

The nurse in charge, Sister Swanepoel Hedwick, said: "We are currently keeping the babies in the incubator for easy monitoring of the temperatures and oxygen."

The Registrar, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Abdulmumini Ibrahim, said on Friday that the council prosecuted 23 quacks in the medical profession in Nigeria.

Ibrahim told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the council was poised to sanitise the profession to restore standards. He added that activities of quacks would no longer be tolerated.

"Part of our achievements last year was to prosecute quacks; I made mention of membership of the council that cuts across the states of the federation.

"What we have in the states are state monitoring committees; these state monitoring committees are under the auspices of the director of medical services in the state ministry of health.

"They do the monitoring of functions of the council in their states, when they identify the quacks and the suspected doctors or quacks, they report them," he
said.
